I like to think that Charlie is going with the express brief of calling Trump a c**t to his face.

I am against the monarchy. I object that these people are supposed to be better than me due to marriage or an accident of birth. The only problem is that I don't know what you could have instead, as picking an Irish style President would never be agreed upon. But that said, if Charles was to tell Trump a few home truths, I would buy every commerativ commemorative plate going.

Better than you? In what way does being king mean they are better than you?

When did you last get several palaces or a golden carriage to ride in? The British state tells you that he's better than you.

There are a lot of legacy issues with the monarchy, it's true and it can make us look somewhat Ruritanian on the World stage. However, the King. like our Member of Parliament or Member of the Scottish Parliament, is there to represent us but unlike our MP or MSP they will not be voted out...or get to retire gracefully. So I am prepared to cut him a little slack, especially if he can rationalise the entitled family down in numbers to a Norwegian level.

I think the requirement to bow before them kind of (wrongly) implies that.

He probably doesn't even understand that, we should address him as 'Seine Königliche Hoheit'...

Eh? Nobody is born better than you. Full stop. The accident of who your mother or father happens to be tells you precisely nothing about a person’s worth, intelligence, or character. When people bow or show deference, they’re acknowledging the office, the institution, the history it represents, not the actual human standing in front of them. The monarchy is a construct, the person wearing it is just a person. The moment you start believing the title makes the individual genuinely “better than you”, you’ve crossed from respecting tradition into the idea that some people matter more than others by birthright. They don’t, and I don’t understand people who think they do. Respect the role if that’s your thing but don’t confuse it with the individual deserving it, there are plenty of idiots born into power and sadly plenty more elected into it.

That I am supposed to offer them greater respect than I would do others just because who they are. Outside of a basic level which you should give everyone, you damn well earn respect, you don't expect it as a right. It's like those who say people should respect their elders. Complete twaddle. I'm 53 in a couple of weeks. I don't expect the younger folk I work with to respect me more just because I'm 20 or 30 years older than them. I've had to earn their respect. And after decades dealing with the public, I've always had the most disrespect shown to me by those older than I am now.
