| Past away and third kits. 21:22 - Apr 29 with 1242 views | MattinLondon | I guess that this is a question for the elder statesmen of this board or if there’s any ITFC historians on here. I’m just intrigued what the colours of past Town away kits were? I think that in the 50s we would’ve played teams like Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn and Brighton and so did we have third kits back then? One of those questions that I’ve always wondered - cheers. | | | | |

That’s possibly something that happened. I know from looking at previous FA Cup finals from the 50s that third kits were a thing back then and so what with our colours being rather generic - colour clashes were quite frequent especially blue and white kits.
| Past away and third kits. on 21:59 - Apr 29 with 1092 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Everything was in black and white anyway. "Ray Reardon, here going for the blue, and for those of you watching in black and white, that's the ball immediately behind the pink" | |

I believe the proper first 3rd kit, was an orange third strip made by adidas in the early 80s to compliment the white version. This echoed again when we adopted the pinstriped kits. The next third kit was mid-80s and was the original red/black AC Milan rip off, and we had both a white and a red away kit a few seasons later used as 2nd and third kits interchangeably. We have a white third in 1991 which carried over in 92/93 and that’s when we had the second AC Milan rip-off 3rd for a season. In the 90’s we had the green/claret (away in 1995/96) which acted as the third shirt in 1996/97, and that was the last time we sold three kits for a while. The thirds in 1997/99 (white), 2000/01 (deep red, never used), 2001/02 (black), 2002/03 (white) were never sold to the fans. The 2003-05 white third kit was sold as one off. When then started the tradition of reusing away kits as thirds for the following season from 2005 right through to 2014, with only one off produced in that period (2009/10 white). Interestingly the red away, released by Mitre in 2008, is our longest serving strip of the century, being used right up until 2012 as a third kit.

And not to forget 1896, when Engineers - despite playing at home - controversially wore their 4th change strip* against Corinthians in order to sell more replicas in Siam. *designed by superfan LS Lowry.

Think that may well have been the origin of the phrase ‘games gone’.

Found this article on Sunderland using Newcastle's black & white stripes because of a clash - https://www.sunderlandecho.com With a changes in production techniques, for "sports wear" in the early 60's saw us use red as an alternative, before yellow and blue. Third kits didn't exist and only started to make an appearance in the 80s, partly due to he increase in televised football, and even then replicas were very rarely sold by clubs. https://www.historicalkits.co.

There was an orange 3rd kit in 77/78 (same Adidas template as blue/white and white/black) worn against Bristol Rovers in the cup | | | | Login to get fewer ads

AWAY White for much of our history Late 60s to early 70s- Red 72 (ish) to 77 (ish)- Yellow/Blue 77-87- White 87-89- Red 89-92- Orange 92-93- White 93-95- Red 95-96 Green/Maroon 96-97- Cream/Black (previous third kit) 98-2000- Orange THIRD KITS 78-81 (ish)- Orange/Black 82-84- Red 84-87 Black and Red Stripes 87-92- Can't remember (possibly white unofficially) 92-93- Black/Red Stripes 93-95 No idea (probably didn't need one but a white shirt was probably held in reserve) 95-96- Cream/Black [Post edited 29 Apr 23:01]

But surly even in the fifties if we played a team like Blackburn or Brighton, a blue home kit and white away kit wouldn’t be able to happen? Or maybe I’m overthinking this.

Innit. The world must have been really boring before we invented colour.

The invention of colour allowed clubs to sell a lot more replica kits - makes you think. [Post edited 30 Apr 15:54]

The referees had better eyesight back then. 😀 I think you maybe over thinking it, Town would likely have worn white shirts / black shorts. As per the Sunderland Echo link in the previous post, teams would borrow kit from local teams if there was no other option.
