Have to improve threat from Set pieces next season ... 20:57 - May 3 with 783 viewsBellevue_Blue

I've got to be honest, I've been pretty underwhelmed by Mark Hudson's input the last few years on set pieces ..

24/25 - Ranked 19/20 for set piece goals scored and 15/20 for goals conceded
25/26 - Ranked 12/24 for set piece goals scored and 4/24 for goals conceded

We are not scoring anywhere near enough and with the PL trending more towards that we simply have to improve.

We have more than enough quality on the ball in Davis, Nunez, Clarke and a few who have a decent throw on them ....

Nunez corners have been poor. Feels like we’ve whipped in a lot to the back stick for Dara to nod back but they haven’t quite come off. Trying to think what game it was in 23-24 and the short corner routine that Chaplin scored from.

Can't remember the last time I got excited about us getting a corner, plus how many headers at goal have we totally fluffed this season.

Such an important part of the modern day game, just ask Arsenal ( or wait till next season !). Needs to improve quite dramatically, both corners and free kicks.

Fairly sure we brought in a Spanish fella as well to help the set pice team.

Agreed we need to be better from them though. How many headers did we win at the back post that led to nothing.

Mark Hudson is clearly a really popular member of the staff, but I do think that perhaps set piece coach is not exactly his forte.

I'd be busting a gut to get Scott Fry from Rangers

I think that's about right - the set piece routines have created quite a lot of threat - players just haven't converted them.

We have had the occasional 'clever' routine (Leif at Oxford) but generally getting our blocking patterns right has led to us creating a headed chance at the back post - either directly or putting it back into the 6 yard box. We just haven't finished enough them when we've done that. That's more on the players than the set piece coach I think.

Sky displayed a stat during the Southampton game that O’Shea has had the most first contacts from attacking set pieces in the league. The problem is we’re not the most imposing team in the box so realistically we’re trying to hit O’Shea and Kipre/Greaves the majority of the time so a bit easier to try and defend. I would expect the likes of Milwall etc to beat us in this category so think he’s done ok.
