Squad List 12:16 - May 6 with 1146 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Heads up, this is a detailed post...

Looking at the squad list, we are in a very good position with assets tied down on long term contracts. Nothing to worry about this summer in terms of contract extensions. I think we are in a good place to command fair transfer fees for possible outgoing players.

2030:
Dara O'Shea
Sindre Walle Egeli

2029:
Jacob Greaves
Leif Davis
Azor Matusiwa
Kasey McAteer
Marcelino Nunez
Anis Mehmeti
Chuba Akpom
Jaden Philogene
Jack Clarke
George Hirst

2028:
Christian Walton
Alex Palmer
Cieran Slicker **
Aro Muric **
Cedric Kipre
Elkan Baggott
Darnell Furlong
Ben Johnson
Jack Taylor
Chio Ogbene **
Sammie Szmodics **
Ali Al-Hamadi **

2027:
Cameron Humphreys**
Henry Gray**

2026:
David Button
Harry Clarke **
Ashley Young ***
Conor Townsend
Jens Cajuste*
Dan Neil*
Wes Burns
Conor Chaplin**
Ivan Azon*

* On loan
** Out on loan and returning
*** Retiring

Looking at those with their contract expiring this summer, these are who I think will not be offered a new deal: David Button*, Wes Burns & Conor Chaplin. Jens Cajuste, Dan Neil and Ivan Azon to return back to their parent clubs and will not be returning. *I have a feeling Button will be offered some sort of new terms without being registered towards the squad limit.

Out of those with their contract expiring this summer, I think the following will be offered a new deal/option triggered: Harry Clarke (option triggered with a view to selling) & Conor Townsend.

I think the following players will be sold/looking for regular football or loaned out: Harry Clarke, Cameron Humphreys, Alex Palmer, Cieran Slicker, Aro Muric, Elkan Baggott, Chio Ogbene, Sammie Szmodics & Ali Al-Hamadi.

I think the following will be part of the PL squad next season: Conor Townsend, Henry Gray* Christian Walton, Cedric Kipre, Darnell Furlong, Jack Taylor, Jacob Greaves, Leif Davis, Azor Matusiwa, Kasey McAteer, Marcelino Nunez, Anis Mehmeti, Jaden Philogene, Jack Clarke, George Hirst, Dara O'Shea & Sindre Walle Egeli*.

(Question marks over Ben Johnson's & Chuba Akpom's future who I have not included in any list)

*Henry Gray and Sindre Walle Egeli will count as an U21 player, therefore, not needed to be registered as part of the 25-man PL senior squad limit. Gray to become the 3rd choice GK.

With that said, that would leave 15 senior players (with an additional 2 already counting as an U21 player in Gray & Egeli and excluding Johnson and Akpom). That gives us headroom for 10 new players.

Areas we will potentially target:

- New Goalkeeper to become number 1. I think someone like Nick Pope would be a great choice. Brilliant shot stopper, safe pair of hands but would struggle with the ball at his feet. Experienced and commanding GK and who also grew up locally as an ITFC season ticket holder. 1 year left on his contract at Newcastle.

- New CB. I would like Tyrone Mings to return. Decent PL experience and the type of athletic/physical profile we need to target. Like Nick Pope, 1 year left on his contract at Aston Villa.

- New RB. Furlong to become second choice.

- 2 new centre midfielders. I really like Myles Lewis-Skelly if he was to become available on loan (though he played very well last night). The other CM needs to have a commanding physical profile - someone in the mould of Anton Stach for Leeds (with the same impact!). Dip into the foreign market.

- 1 Right Winger

- 2 attacking midfielders. An Enciso type and a versatile 10.

- 2 Strikers. Liam Delap back on loan with an option to buy is something I'm sure we will explore. The other striker I would like is either Wilson Isidor from Sunderland or Esteban Lepaul from Rennes. Lepaul has had a really good couple of seasons infront of goal in France. He's sharp and a handful despite looking like someone who would struggle with the physical side of the game on the eye.

What are the general thoughts?

You had me until you started mentioning signings.

Nick Pope - No chance at all and 34 now so really limited.
Tyrone Mings - Possible, but captained them last weekend, no signs of him going anywhere this summer
Myles Lewis-Skelly - The England international? Who appears regularly for Arsenal? That one?
Liam Delap - I would be stunned. Only scored two goals for us after mid February has not done anything for Chelsea. I understand there are rumours, but as far as I can tell, most of the rumours are coming from Chelsea fans who want him gone.

If Nick Pope struggles with the ball at his feet, not sure he’s what we’ll need.

Nick Pope has been playing consistently in the PL for years. It is exactly the type of goalkeeper we need. We will face a high % of shots and a reliable shot stopper will give us a better chance.

Regarding Mings, he's behind Pau Torres at Villa. He only played at the weekend because Villa appear to be prioritising the Europa League game tomorrow. He's made 15 PL appearances this season.

Myles Lewis-Skelly has just appeared in Arsenal's last two games. He has been out of the side for weeks prior to that. I think it is a small possibility, but he's a midfielder by trade who can play LB too.

Wait and see with Delap. I'm sure he will be on the move this summer. He's not good enough for Chelsea but I don't blame him accepting the offer on the table last summer.

I think there is a 0% chance Lewis Skelly plays for Ipswich Town next season.

Appreciate the post though, good to see it all laid out like that. Does Cam Hump need some ** next to his name ?

He's in that category where I just don't see where he fits in. In the PL, he looked below par at RB (the position he was signed to play). He made a better fist of it when he was moved to the RW, but it was always a defensive minded option.

This season I thought he was going to be nailed on to start at RB. Young & Furlong were then brought into the club. When he did feature towards the back end of the season, he did well. I thought he put in some good performances at LB in the absence of Davis. He did well on the right wing against Norwich.

He's got 2 years left on his contract though. I wonder if we will look to move him on. He won't get loaned out, but he could be sold. If I remember with Johnson, he does not want to re-locate from the south Essex area - which could be an issue with trying to move him on + the wages.

His minutes since Christmas have been limited. When he does play, he puts in good performances. He will probably stay in the Arsenal side until the end of the season seeing as he's started back-to-back games. He's Arsenal's for the long term, but I wonder if they will look to loan him out next season. He is only 19.

Yes, you are right regarding Humphreys.

I can't see anyone outside of the below being Ipswich players come the close of the August window. And I suspect a couple of the below might well end up going too.

GK - Walton
RB - Furlong/Johnson
CB - O'Shea/Kipre/Greaves
LB - Davis
CM - Matusiwa/Taylor
RM - McAteer/Egeli
10 - Nunez/Mehmeti
LM - Philogene/Clarke
ST - Hirst

Even if MLS leaves Arsenal on loan, there will be a big queue of big, established clubs lining up to take him, from the PL and abroad.

You just have to listen to Declan Rice's interview after the game last night to realise there's about as much chance of MLS coming here as there is me taking Margot Robbie out for a drink.
