Bloody play-offs. Scars never heal 06:24 - May 8 with 1692 viewsWarkystache

Sedgeley and that post. Fjortoft and Taricco. That bloody striker Bolton had who always scored - Bob something. Charlton scoring a worldie.

I'm hoping Hull win tonight. Think it'll be a draw though.

Sitting in the NS watching West Ham beat us I can still see those plastic fks now walking up to the station ‘Irons’ at the top of their voices.

Working in Chelmsford on a refurb job the following day and getting so much stick for a few days after, that was pretty awful.

Funny how that stays with you.

2 years running as well Benters

Can still remember Zamora sealing the win at Portman Rd

That was tough to take especially after we had drawn the first Leg 2-2 and we were a far better side than them

Everything went downhill after that season until the last few years under McKenna despite a brief revival under McCarthy 14/15

West Ham were our nemesis (nemeses?) that season. They beat us 2 0 at home in the regular season too, with a total cock up straight from the kick off allowing Harewood to roll the ball into our empty net. 3 points there and we would have got the autos above Wigan (all other things being equal).

Worst. Game. Ever. Conceded after 20 seconds, played awfully, but had hope of equaliser right til the end, conceded second after 90mins or something.

I think that Sheffield United one remains one of the most disappointing results in my time supporting Town and I couldn't even get there. Last exam of my second year at uni on the same day so couldn't skip that. I've rarely felt so flat as I did the next day.

Each of the four play-off finals that Sheffield United have lost since has been cathartic.

I'm very glad we're not in them, this year and looking forward to enjoying other teams suffer.

Bloody play-offs. Scars never heal on 07:48 - May 8 with 1337 viewsChurchman

I love the play offs, but hate them if we are in them.

We played Charlton in the first ever ones. Saw both games. The away game came second and it was played at Charlton’s temporary home Selhurst Park. We stank the place out and some ginger bloke called Melrose did for us. A miserable day.

Then we played in order Sheffield United. Gutted. Should have beaten them after a good away draw

Charlton. We got what we deserved. Well beaten in the end.

Bolton. An astonishing home game but sad - I knew we’d lose KD and thought we’d struggle, but of course we all know what happened the following season.

West Ham x2. We should have won one of those ties, but somehow we were sort of frail. Their supporters were and are odious which is why I hope they go down the pan. My boss at the time of the second tie was a West Ham fan. A real smug, greasy, East End geezer. I wanted to head butt him and stamp on the remains. That night at Portman Road was the most disappointing of the lot.

Norwich - strangely, I was neither surprised or disappointed. They were a much stronger football team than us and the outcome felt inevitable. Their form was better too with us dribbling over the play off line having promised so much more around Christmas.

Play offs? Obviously it’s a fantastic way to get promoted. Nothing better. But I’ll take a quiet, done and dusted second place every time. I get to watch four teams suffer and one come out ecstatic.

I was fortunate/unfortunate enough to witness the home ties and one away. The best games for me were the two Bolton ones. Strangely we played better in the 4-3 match than we did in the most astonishing ITFC game I’ve ever witnessed the following season.

Other than winning the playoffs the stand outs are losing the early playoff format v charlton over two legs in 1987 2:1 and i might misremember this one, Darren Bent going 1v1 at Wet Spam then us losing that over two legs having done ok at home first leg

I travelled overnight on a coach from Newcastle, where I was at Uni (poly!), and got to Selhurst Park so early I seemed to be the only person near the ground - nothing was going on. And then the game was pretty much over after 20 minutes. A miserable tiring day….

I went to the Sheffield United result away in that year (1997!) with Uni friends. The away end was great and we enjoyed the 1-1, thinking it would be enough.

The hurt from the following playoffs years compounded the misery and it wasn't until I completed University that we were promoted, watching us beat Barnsley on one of the final days of Uni.

Sheff Utd 1997, my mate left after 60 minutes just couldnt handle the pressure. Returned with 5 to go.
Bolton 1999, couldnt get out of my seat for at least 20 minutes after the final whistle
Bolton 2000, didnt attend as had Weller tickets and just couldnt handle more disappointment. Huge regret. Although I attended Weller with two Norwich fans so the journey home was truly satisfying.

86/7 was such a frustrating season, we were bookies favourites to go straight back up.

Still had 3 of our UEFA cup winning squad playing for us in the second tier and a midfield of Brennan/Dozzell/Zondervan and Wilson up top should have been good enough.

5 of that side in the Charlton match went on to play top flight without us in the next 2/3 years - Cooper & Gleghorn for Man City, McCall for Sheff Weds, Brennan for Boro/Oldham and Jocky Wilson for Chelski.

Amazing what annoys you nearly 40 years on!

Yes, I think one of the reasons the second leg hurt so much was that the first leg was superb: 5,000 town fans, soaking wet in the lower tier and we never stopped singing even when we were 1-0 down.

Charlton in 1998 was a shame, we'd been on flying form and I remember Portman Road was absolutely bouncing for that one – beautiful sunny weekend and I'd been incredibly excited all week, I don't think the stadium had felt quite like that for a day game since 1992. But Charlton started strongly, Clapham scored an avoidable own goal and from then on they just snuffed us out of the entire tie.

The crowd was a pitiful 11,237. Majority ITFC. The team just never showed up. God, it was bad. The mess we made of the games against them ten years better weren't any better.

I’ve disliked that grotty mob and their B&Q ground ever since. We can never beat them enough or heavily enough. The organiser of this week’s golf trip is a Charlton ST holder. I made sure I wore my ITFC baseball cap as often as possible. He didn't want to talk about the football, even when i raised the subject of how well Charlton had done to survive. Oh dear, so sad, never mind.

That's one of the reasons why I'll never forgive Clive Thomas for robbing us of the FA Cup in 1975. I was at school in Chelmsford & surrounded by Hammers.

My father wouldn't take me with him, I remember listening to it in bed...."Cooper, kicks the ball high into the mid-air of London"...I have always remembered that from the commentary, kind of magical when you're a boy...
