Teachers are striking through the exam period - kids and parents are kicking off. Two opposing links for fairness (if anyone's interested), but quite an interesting situation, I reckon:

I don't know the details but seems irresponsible striking during exams. And didn't they get a pay rise last month anyway?
I'm not totally up on it, but I think the school has particular problems in that its got poor reputation and resultant falling number of students, so getting in less money. The parents feel the strikes are only going to make this worse, while the children seem to have decided a counter-protest is the answer. If you listen to the kids' side, they say that teachers turned their backs on them during their protest - not a good look.

School budgets are at breaking point, pupil behaviour is the worst it has ever been, parents don't discipline their children or support teachers when it comes to discipline, teaching assistants are losing jobs when pupils with SEND are increasing, higher-paid teachers are being targeted by schools in order to persuade them to leave and then be replaced by inexperienced and cheaper teachers or even unqualified teachers.
In the free school chain my daughter works in there are 37 people earning between £100,000 and £200,000, one earning over £220,000 and one earning over £380,0000.
That strikes me as a lot of money that ain't going on education.
It really is a gravy train for some but not the 2,500 staff in the chain, made up of ordinary teachers, teaching assistants and admin staff.
I therefore have a great deal of sympathy with those striking in Walthamstow who face targeted job losses.

The whole point of strikes is that they need to have an impact. Holding strikes when they are less likely to have an impact is pointless. Teachers, like most public sector workers, have experienced real terms pay cuts since 2010 and they are working in unsustainable conditions due to school funding not keeping up with demand and rising costs. There's a reason teachers are leaving the profession in large numbers, turnover rates are eye wateringly high.

I think you and I don't really agree on strikes generally. It would be amazing if there was a way that people could strike and it only impact the higher ups and not the people accessing whatever service it may be. But that's not really possible. Yeah, we have butted heads politely on this before!
I do have a lot of sympathy with the teachers - what DJH says about getting rid of experienced teachers for cheaper ones, rings very true, for instance. Another one I'd add is the insecurity of support staff contracts and the far-lower pay such staff receive.
I guess the most interesting thing about this story is the social action element being on both sides of this particular argument.

Teachers on an absolute hiding to nothing there. The kids have every right to but that's an impossible situation clipped up nicely for the socials. There is never going to be anything close to a meaningful answer for the kids across a picket line and a street via megaphone. 'Oh my god sooooo disrespectful...'when one of the teachers even slightly turns away from being blared at.
Good luck to the kids for getting involved in the politics of it all and I'm not saying they're wrong by any means, just that this isn't really a gotcha moment that proves anything, just overblown strike bashing.

From the very little I've seen of GB news, it probably needs such treatment because it is so biased. And Chrystis can't help himself by getting in a dig about Palestine.
And it amazes me that such an openly partisan broadcaster is allowed to exist given the due impartiality obligations that apply to all other broadcasters.

I saw that video but not through any connection to GB news .. I’m guessing Channel 4 and its news is still “neutral” these days ?
Being a teen of the 80’s I do recall the teaching strikes and work to rule really spoiling my education and other interests outside the curriculum (eg no sports clubs at lunch) They were so distracted by the industrial action that even when not taking part the apathy was very prevalent.
I’m not blaming them as many would say it was the conservative government policies that drove them to it and they had no other options .. but I still feel aggrieved by what went on during that time and feel on the whole let down by both sides when either could have done better for us.
