I'd be quite interested to see how it goes this summer and what kind of impact our new international scouts have. Do we think that is more of a long-term project or that they will already have a list of players they recommend? (Yes that does sound a bit Footy Manager!)

| Mick Court on 16:21 - May 11 with 2072 views | Bellevue_Blue | He would have absolutely had a say but I agree, I think circumstance probably nullified his impact .... 90% of clubs build teams in the summer and supplement in January and we were no different + we didn't quite know what division we were recruiting for. This summer I think he will have much more of a say. We will be recruiting for every position on the pitch and him and KM have a blank canvas for the new 'team'. I think the international scouting impact will be significant. Nowadays it is far more about utilising a network to understand culture and stylistic fit. Everyone can be watched online and the data tells you part of the story, the other stuff can only gathered through those around the players, such as coaches/ scouts/ executives in that region. That's the challenge and the benefit from having experience boots on the ground who will have worked in those ecosystems. Peter Braund for example has been a Chief Scout in Switzerland and Germany. That would allow us to be much more calculated in the way that we navigate those markets and most importantly, mitigate risk. [Post edited 11 May 16:23]

No idea to be honest. Ordinarily I'd say that working for Manure is a pretty good marker for someone having done well but I'm not sure their recent recruitment is too much to shout home about!

Utd have been a sh1t show for 13 years, especially in recruitment.

I think there is always split blame when it comes to failed signings but I'd be hesitant to blame to the state of Manchester United on two people who were very much secondary decision makers. Peter Braund was not telling Sir Alex Ferguson, Moyes and Van Gaal who to sign whilst he was there and Mick Court was reporting to two sporting directors, John Murtough and Dan Ashworth for the bulk of his second stint.

Not saying its his fault, was just saying Utd aren't the exemplar that they once were. Also, I don't think he was senior enough to impact too much of their strategy.

And your suggestion isn't Football Manager, it's exactly how it works, or at least used to - they'd have a list of targets per position they want to go after. I even made the screen a lot of UK clubs used...

Is there any known link to Ashton? I assumed that, with the Man Utd history, if there were any links at all they would be with McKenna.

| Mick Court on 19:05 - May 11 with 1463 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Ashton's interview with Talksport in 2024 was highly concerning to me when he said the model is "British players that have come through the academy". That simply has to change this year for so many reasons. I really hope the recruitment department is being set up very differently and has been a primary focus for anticipation of promotion. I don't expect us to have connections to the extent of Le Bris or Ghisolfi (I mean that how you get someone like Le Fee to come from Roma to the Championship). However, it does concern we have all the PL money and basically level of experience and club caliber before us is WBA, Bristol and Oxford. [Post edited 11 May 19:06]

Worked with him at Watford. Kieran said he didn't have much to do with the scouting side of things at United.

Man Utd weren't doing that well on the pitch when McKenna was coach either, but he's turned out ok

That certainly makes the appointments of the over-seas scouts exciting then!
