Is our next big date. The transfer window opens. A must to get players in early. A major mistake last time we went upto the Premier league.
Far better to integrate players through July and August, than September and October.
The key to premier league survival is undoubtedly a good start, if you don't get points on the board early , playing catch up in that league as a promoted side is nigh impossible

But that needs to be balanced against getting the right people in.

A useful reference point might be Sunderland (although I think the World Cup will impact the whole market this summer)

These are dates during the summer transfer window when Sunderland announced signings:
July 1, 4, 8, 9, 10, 30
August 1, 6, 10, 12, 17
September 1 (deadline day)

The World Cup is going to pose an issue this summer with getting players in quickly. But that is an issue for everyone. Probably an argument teams with less players at the World Cup have a better chance of being ready to go and settling into the season quicker too.

Broken record time. Sunderland are a good blueprint. It's more who and the type of player they brought in than precisely when.

I'm arguing that getting them sooner is a bad thing, clearly the sooner the better.

This time, though, we need to be more savvy on who we bring in.

i agree - but this is a world cup year. many agents will be hanging on.

then again, if we're in this boat, so is everyone else.

but i do agree -early business and settling in is absolutely key to our next attempt at staying in the EPL

Think everyone would like their business done by 16th June, but as we know, easier said than done.

Apart from the trickle down from the big transfers will the WC have that much effect? Each team of 48 countries can take a maximum of 26 players. With all due respect several of those countries will have few players at Prem level. Can’t really see there being a shortage of players on the move. Might be a good time to raid the Italian market?

It reality the date is actually pretty insignificant. Deals can be done now, they players just can’t be registered until that point.

One would imagine some player discussions have already taken place.

So Sunderland had just about all their players in before the season started and most of them , with a month to spare. Maybe not the only factor in them staying up, but certainly one of them.

We certainly can’t afford to be in the position we found ourselves this season. No win in the first month and the team not gelling for months. We need to be ready first game. So really need bodies in the door.i do agree with others though, being a World Cup year it is going to slow things up a bit I think.

Agree we need them in as soon as possible. The one slight difference this season is the extended first international break of 3 weeks which takes place fairly soon after the season starts.

Obviously that doesn't help if we have lots of new players going back out on international duty but should help others bed in if they arrive slightly later in the window.

Wouldn't work even if we did the right players in too late. Promoted side trying to play catch up in the PL? I think we know the answer. Simple solution, get the right players, with the right temperaments at the right pricef for sure, but get them in by pre season.
