Star could surely be reduced to a once a week newspaper if they’re going to fill space with “the AI suggested” crap. Who knew that Pickover’s gushing tribute to Marcus Evans was the golden age?

While it is not alone in this, the Star seems to be headline news about a shop opening, a list of 'eateries' featured on TripAdvisor, who remembers a pub in 1990? and a reprint of an on this day story from a year ago.

By 2040 climate change will mean we have endless summers so won't need anything above the stands......

it's pretty desperate stuff. They're trying to survive in a world where they're not needed.

The Star just gets worse and worse. They must be laughing their b0llocks off at some of the stuff they post. The other day there was a story about one of their journalists going to Gippeswyck Park to investigate why there was such a high crime rate at that park... Went to the park - in the middle of the day. The article was basically 'not sure what the fuss is, seems quite nice'. I kid you not. Bloke literally went for a walk in the park and called it work.

Id argue local news/journalism is still needed, and theres absolutely a market for it. however what theyre trying to do is compete in a world where such news is often freely shared on social media, you often find out far more whats happening if you subscribe to a local facebook group than reading the Star thesedays which has had the consequence of them basically going we have to compete with free, which means we cant pay for the quality journalism that people would buy & pay for, we have to do journalism for free. so like all the pictures are crowd sourced or google maps, every article feels like its been written by an AI, or just copied from a press release, they dont proof read, via an old fashioned editor, the stuff they get their people to write, because thats the cheapest way to do it. thats why you get stuff like this to fill space, and things that are literally tripadvisor reviews. some of their top 5 things are hilarious, as its often very clear they havent been to the locations theyre recommending, as the descriptions are often wildly inaccurate, which is classic sign its just an ai generated content list.

Yes to local journalism, but it largely will not come from places like the Star, EADT, Evening Standard etc. It will be in places like London Centric, the Manchester Mill, Now Then (Sheffield), the Glasgow Bell, The Ferret (Scotland) and Liverpool Post. The Byline network have been doing ok things regionally, including in East Anglia where the trad press have utterly failed the counties.
