Villa as a case study 08:34 - May 21 with 774 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Should give us hope that with the backing we have we can do something at some point.

2016/17 Championship 13th
2017/18 Championship 4th
2018/19 Championship 5th (P)
2019/20 Premier League 17th (Milk Cup Runners Up)
2020/21 Premier League 11th
2021/22 Premier League 14th
2022/23 Premier League 7th (Uefa Conference Semi Final)
2023/24 Premier League 4th
2024/25 Premier League 6th (FA Cup Semi Final)

Obviously, there is the issue of revenue, Villa's currently is £378m, Ours in the Prem was £155m, but we'd done the bounce from L1. We could expect next years to be closer to £200m

For reference Villas in 2021/22 (post covid) was £180m (207m accounting for inflation)

If we can stay up and slowly build then we could with the finance behind us, slowly progress up the Prem. However, if we go back down, the reset button gets pressed (again).

Lets hope for a 17th place finish, anything else is bonus.

Is it really comparable? Apart from that blip into the Championship they were a solid Premier League team with over 20 years of PL funding.

Much as it pains me to say, Villa are a much bigger club than us and we can't really be compared with them.

Villa's approach had PSR trouble hanging over them (and may still have).

Our primary focus has to be on staying up this season. Sunderland and Leeds have shown that it is possible. It may mean we have to come away from the preferred formation and adapt to stay in games longer and pick up more points - like Leeds did from January onwards.

I'd like us to go down the experienced route this summer, with a sprinkle of younger talents that can be bedded in, rather than having the expectation on younger shoulders like Delap and Hutchinson had last time out.

Our revenue is too low. As much as it pains me, the last thing we need is to finish 5th and qualify for Europe any time soon.

SCR rules allow 85% of revenue to be spent on the squad. However, that drops to 70% if in Europe to be in line with UEFA regulations. Without a massive revenue increase that would hit our chances of competing to stay in the Premier League, let alone having a stretched squad.

An unfortunate reality. The financial rules protect the big six who have global revenue streams. Ed Sheeran will have to do some serious work!

Wasn't Villa's 2021/22 money was based on the previous TV deal, so cannot be compared directly to our revenue numbers from 24/25.

Villa is not the case study - larger ground, larger fanbase and more established in the PL since inception.

We have to accept here that since the Premier league formed 34 years ago we've spent a total of 6 seasons in it. Villa have spent a lot more than that.

We are not comparable.

A lot of Town fans think we are a Premier team but since the Robson era that isn't really the case.

Interesting nicked from whataspp fact: Emery has won the Europa league with 3 clubs, which all have the 'villa' in their name. Weird sh1t.

Anyway, carry on....

I'd say that, over the medium term at least, Palace are more comparable. Much more similar size of following, ground, revenue etc., now spent 13 seasons in the prem, all of which have been between 10th and 15th - so never truely troubled by relegation at the business end of the season, or realistically competing for european places.

A handful of successful cup runs - One win, one RU, one Semi in the FA cup. Obviously going great guns in the conference league this season as well.

If our next 10 years look similar, how happy would fans be?

Yes. I think Bournemouth are a better example to use. We were both challenging for promotion with us back in 2015. Got promoted to the Premier League. Relegated back to the Championship (although not straight away). Promoted back to the Premier League and now on the verge of Champions League qualification if results go their way on Sunday.

Don’t see how it’s remotely comparable, tbh.

And as mentioned on the wireless last night. Of their starting 11 last night only 1, Torres, was purchased from abroad.
Yes they have non UK players, but all the other starting 10 were purchased from UK clubs.
Maybe thats the blueprint for success?
