Marcelo Flores 09:47 - May 31 with 1875 viewswaveneyblue

Just looked up his career since jumping ship to Arsenal.

Seem to recall when he went there was quite a bit of fuss, but as with a lot of these kids, he hasnt reached the heights expected.

(Not saying that been picked for your (adopted) country isnt impressive.

I recall Charlie Brown but was there another promising youth we sold for big money who didn’t/hasn’t quite hit the heights?

Think theres a few. I actually can't think of one who's actually gone on to be a success.

Shows how hard it is to "make it" and why we dont see many home grown players now.

Edit. Is it Ben Knight youre thinking of Illy ?

Flores, Brown, Knight.

I remember all of them being 'stolen' from us for peanuts. 500k - 1 million.

In reality, we got the better deal.

Didn’t both Spurs and Villa poach/buy two of our promising young players a couple seasons ago?

Completely forgotten their names if I am remembering correctly.

On the face of it, it looks that way.

You also have to wonder whether they may have made better progress had they stayed with the academy they were progressing well at. Not that you can blame them for taking the chance they were offered.

It also goes to show there are no guarantees with potential. The club has paid a lot for potential with some recent signings and could do with more than one of them paying off (although Hutchinson and Delap already have very quickly).

It's very simple.

What history have we got for producing top players lately? And that's not from getting these kids to age grade international squads.... but for them to make the senior squad, make significant appearances and then get sold up the ladder for serious money. We're not that good. Downes was the best of the lot. Maybe Woolfy as he got a decent fee.

We're truly not that good as a conveyor belt for home-grown talent. I really think for years we kidded ourselves we had a top class academy under Klug when we weren't that great. Klug was good at bringing through technically good players, but who were a bit on the flimsy side.
I think we were the party that got the best deal with Flores, Knight, etc.

Absolutely and, as I said, you can entirely understand their decisions for that reason and several others too. However, you can only work with what you've got and if the best of it is poached perhaps you are limited on what you can do. Those individuals progressed enough to get noticed in their age bracket.

Teddie Bloomfield went to Villa, Matt Bloomfield's nephew.

The fact that a number of our better talents moved on at 15 or 16 obviously hampered us in the years since the EPPP was introduced. How those players might have developed had they remained here is something we'll never know.

For all the criticism of the academy, there are more players to have come through our academy, largely from the period before the takeover, who are playing in the EFL than ever before. I don't think the new ownership particularly valued the academy when they came in, a lot of staff who had been doing well in not easy circumstances under ME were moved on or allowed to move on, same with some of the players, but latterly, the switch to cat one illustrating the point, there has been far more of a focus.

I guess the argument with the bigger clubs is that the fall down the leagues is softened with a big club on your CV

Knight may well have made it with us though in fairness

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

He's hitting a good height though! I think for any youth to be playing his level they have basically made it. At 22 he could still play in a top 4 league. Mexican top flight is a good standard and his club just made the Concaf equivalent of champions League final.
