So, Wolves then 09:03 - Jun 10 with 1880 viewsFrimleyBlue

Either coming back up with absolutely no problems at all

or see how difficult it is and think sht we've spent alot on wages if we don't make it back up..

On paper, they are putting together a quite ridiculous side for the championship. Will be interesting to see how that goes next season.

Other news, I see Hull desperately need to sell some players this month or face a potential point deduction.

As you allude to Frimmers, I don't think there will be much in between: they'll either storm the division and be pushing 100 points or implode quite badly.

As we found last season, most other teams will raise their game against them and West Ham so their players will need to be on it in most of their games - something that they haven't managed for large parts of the last three seasons.

If I had to make a case either way then I think they are more likely to have a good season than West Ham so promotion.

2 35 years olds. Whilst I think they will be fine for them it’s a risky game. People at that age can just drop off a cliff. How many starts did they make last season? 20-30 minutes is a lot easier than 35-40 championships starts.

It will be a tough division next season. Burnley always tend to do well and I think Boro and Millwall will be strong again. Add in whether Wrexham and Birmingham decide to go silly in the summer and if Eckert gets slap on the wrist and it will be a hard one to win.

Agreed, I know we say every year "looks like the toughest year yet", but next season genuinely looks mad. Burnley, Wolves, West Ham, Southampton, Millwall, Middlesbrough will all fancy automatic, plus Birmingham, Wrexham, Derby, Sheffield United and Norwich will all probably spend reasonably and have high hopes.

I'm glad we're not still down there!

Jury is out on West Ham for me.

Wolves, I agree with the op, look very strong and I think Jiminez is a very astute signing for them.

Do you really think the Wolves you saw on the final day of last season will be the one competing in the Championship? I posted this a while back :

The Championship is going to be effing brutal next season. by SuffolkPunchFC 24 May 22:14
It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens with Wolves and West Ham. I expect both to be in financial distress unless they offload a lot of stars.

Both will lose around £75M revenue. This puts West Ham at £150M income, and Wolves at £100M. Their current squad cost for the new financial rules are £275M and £240M respectively. Both have huge wage bills and massive ongoing player amortisation costs. That would put their SCR ratios at 183% and 240%!!!

Yes, they will get their costs down, but only with significant player offloads. I suspect the squads we see playing today to be very different next season for both.

It may not a complete fire sale, but I see a lot of players offloaded for them to remain compliant.

They do have the benefit of four years parachute payments , which means the two year contracts offered to Jimenez and Trippier are covered.

Next years Championship, feels a bit like 2 years ago, when Southampton and Leicester dropped down with 4 years payments owed. It really does give a huge advantage.

Will they sell players, yes undoubtedly, but can see them and West Ham being equivalent of Leicester and Southampton of our first promotion season.

Probably going to need 90+ points to get top two

What do you mean by 'with 4 years payments owed'?

Parachute payments are paid in the year they are due. First year after relegation is ~£55M, second year is ~£35M and third year is ~£20M. Nothing is ever held over, and the subsequent year payments lost if the team is promoted back to the PL.

Teams that have been in the Premier League for more than 3 seasons are due 4 years of parachute payments, not all in one lump, but payments for 4 years.

If a team gets relegated after only one season in the Premier League, they receive 2 years of parachute payments and if a team is relegated after two seasons they receive 3 years.

West Ham and Wolves know that they have a safety net of parachute payments to help cover wages for future seasons, that Burnley do not.

Similar as I say to when Leicester and Southampton were relegated three years ago.

Do you have a reference that confirms this? Parachute payments used to be paid over 4 years (same proportion of money, just distributed differently), but that changed to 3 years in 2015.

Yes, it is only for 2 years if you go straight back down in the first season after promotion, but nothing I've seen suggests that it is stretched to a 4th year for teams that have been in the PL for longer.

It looks a really tough Championship next season. Southampton and I hate to say it, but Norwich will be tough to beat. Add Burnley, West Ham and Wolves to some other tough sides like Sheffield United and Millwall and it won’t be easy for anyone. You’ve got sides like Derby who can beat anyone on their day. Lots of teams like that.
