It seems pretty clear why FIFA have asked for clarification. Although the way FIFA are going he’ll likely get promoted if he claims it was the white supremacist version! Maybe he’s a scuba diver?

We were lucky to get a hoop!

Indeed. Given the point raised, they are entirely reasonable to ask the question and clear it up.

For about the last five or six years this has been *very* well known as a white supremacist gesture. It's annoying, of course, as it makes the traditional 'ok' gesture very iffy, but on balance it's better not to be doing something that could be reasonably interpreted as white power. Lots of people don't know about it - fine, that doesn't mean it might not be a very offensive gesture though. They are perfectly right to try to seek out the intent, though that will be tricky.

| Oh FFS on 19:11 - Jun 15 by KrakenBlue | It wasn't a white supremacist signal before being co-opted a few years ago so not really. It was just an innocent gesture. white supremacists don't own that gesture now but it's a risky one to do out of context to a global audience, especially with the rise of the far right |
I guess its similar to how Shearer used to do the fascist salute every time he scored a goal.

Only in a few insular online communities I suspect. Just because you are in a circle where it is a thing, does not mean most people are.

I literally addressed that, it doesn’t invalidate it as a concern! The point is whether *he* was doing it for that reason. And it’s a bit antediluvian to be describing the online world as insular in this day and age. It’s not only known online anyway - Trump associates have been caught doing it on TV.

I guess he was too embarrassed to say "I had just picked a very satisfying bogie and was just rolling it before flicking it at the main VAR monitor to see if I could make it stick". If it was the "Malcolm in the Middle" game, surely he would have just said that?
