| The massive difference in this appointment 17:46 - Jun 19 with 1571 views | Cheltenham_Blue | versus where we were when we were last in the Prem two years ago is with Kieran gone, all the emotion has gone out of it. GO'N, OGS or whoever it ends up being will not be Ashton's 'good friend' for some time, and come Christmas, if we are becoming adrift in the league, there will be no hesitation but to change manager. I'm not especially pleased with GO'N if Phil is correct, but he has an undeniable record of keeping teams expected to go down in the division, at least for one season. | |

on a forum like this, people tend to have opinions and then they'll post about their opinions. that's the point

| The massive difference in this appointment on 18:11 - Jun 19 with 1336 views | ITFC_Essex | This might upset some for me to highlight this, but if this does go wrong and O’Neil is as toxic as he was at the end of his Wolves tenure then this might be the moment all the good Gamechanger has done starts to unravel. O’Neil won’t have any breathing room from the support, it’s immature but the fact he’s an ex-Norwich player will not buy him much time here. He will have to hit the ground running, and after most of the favourites such as Burns likely cleared out, a lot of the connection will be gone. McKenna couldn’t have gone at a worse time to be honest; I would have taken him being poached mid-season over this. The support is now feeling deflated, after the elation of getting promotion over the line in such a combative way, those superb away games and doing it in style on the final day, to have McKenna decide not to take the project forward is a massive kick in the teeth, whatever the reasons behind it. Many were expecting a Thomas Frank type replacement, getting O’Neil seems like a bogey prize, rather than a step up and you can already feel that tensions building in the wider fanbase and he’s still to be appointed. Ashton himself has lost a lot of credibility, his statements today and appearance on Talksport haven’t done him any favours either. He seems a bit unhinged by it all. [Post edited 19 Jun 18:12]

Our fanbase is too sentimental and can't handle change and a lot of what the modern game has become. Burns should be shake hands and move on tbh, he's the wrong side of 30 and coming back off a serious injury and then a reaggravated injury this time round. He had some good games but was too one footed for the PL last time, we need players at the level and not worry about past connections now that era now Mckenna is over. We should be excited about who we might get in from a player standpoint with the new recruitment team. It's probably because we were success starved for so long and then spoilt in the Mckenna era in terms of winning (at least in the EFL) that everyone struggles to move past it I think. The number of times the 2024 team was mentioned last year started almost becoming unhelpful, and that was with Mckenna here! It's time to get used to being a club in somewhat of a transition. Hopefully a transition to a main stay topflight club. [Post edited 19 Jun 18:27]

It still would not surprise me if it was someone not mentioned up to now.

People need to reset expectations. We were never going to get someone like Frank, currently we have a squad which is at best 18th out of the 20 in the division. An established manager will not want to come into a likely relegation battle, which is realistically where we will be starting the campaign. I’m not disappointed by Gary O’Neil, he kept Bournemouth up in his first season there, he was the scapegoat for the debacle at Wolves but a lot of that was down to how Fosun are running the club, while they escaped relegation after getting rid of him, what happened to Wolves last season shows that the problem was far more fundamental than O’Neil. He’s started well at Strasbourg. Finally not sure I see any evidence of Ashton being unhinged by it all, surprised and probably frustrated but that is the life of a football club CEO. He’s not the first manager he has had to replace and won’t be the last. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Our fanbase cheered Paul Lamber to relegation. I don't think the Norwich connection is an issue Would love to know who else people were expecting as a Thomas Frank appointment. Obviously Frank decided to take a break but I would imagine he would have been at the absolute height of the calibre of manager we could attract. Not sure who else is available that is "like" him to be honest

If he makes us difficult to beat, I'm sure you are right. Our fans, understandably, want someone after McKenna that will take us on again to the next level. And that's great for in a couple of years time, but what we need at the moment is to have a stable base that can stay in the Premier League. The Sunderland story is a once in twenty-five years type event, we just need 17th and then build from there. [Post edited 19 Jun 19:34]

A 1 in 25 year event that happened twice last season.
| The massive difference in this appointment on 19:37 - Jun 19 with 782 views | jas0999 | Agree with this. GON has a terrible record when you look at it, but equally has done enough to keep teams up (hence bottom teams losing games impacting his record). OGS not great managing a team at the bottom of the league. Either way, the new manager will have lots of pressure and if they don’t perform, I’d guess they will be fired. | | | |

A Thomas Frank type replacement, really? The man himself ruled himself out of joining another club this summer, and anyone remotely half decent like him probably already find themselves at a mid table club in any of Europes top 5 leagues? I genuinely have no idea who people expected us to appoint, baffles me. If we give Burns another year because of sentimental reasons, then my god.

‘A terrible record’. A 30% Prem win ratio and keeping 2 clubs in the League, against McKenna with 10.5%. What a terrible terrible manager O’Neill is. Some people are so thick.
