Way out of contention for a place in the Scotland team. Must be heart-breaking to not even get some minutes against Haiti, despite being taken with the squad. Assuming they don't go though, he wont have played a game for Scotland at this World Cup.

I know he has his critics, but compared to those ahead of him he has scored 21 goals in the top two tiers of English football over the past three seasons. If he played for Celtic or Rangers, he'd have had 60 odd during the same period. Shankland and Dykes are a couple of donkeys in their 30's. Dykes wouldn't start for our second string if he was here.

He's rubbish only got there last minute when Conway got injured against saints in the PO semi final
League one at best not the world cup,

Maybe could be worded better but George is not an international footballer, we all know this.

He has put in a great shift for Town over previous seasons mind and scored some vital goals.

You would think he will be on the move this summer to a promotion chasing champ side, be a good move as PL is too much of a jump.

Your correct on the wordage and did what we needed at the time, but we need at least two much better than him,

I like George, but I think this season has been a real struggle for him.

The things that he has typically been pretty good at (solid first touch, winning headers, hold up play), he has been really poor at this year, things that over the past few seasons have somewhat made up for his poor finishing.

It feels like we've been trying to push him down the pecking order for a couple of seasons now, but without much luck, but it does feel like it's his time to move on. We shouldn't really have gone into last season with him as our starting 9, we'll be finished before we've started if that's the case this year.

At points it did feel like, as with many others, KMc managed to pull performances out of Hirst that were above his ability level, and he was never going to get that same support with the national team. I feel for him not getting any minutes, but what a honour to have been a part of something like that.

100%. That has been identified for however many windows. Getting a goal scorer in asap you would think is top of the shopping list.

Steve Clarke would need McTominay to lose a leg before bringing on someone like Hirst against a team like Brazil.

He's going nowhere and will have a part to play this season.

He really isn’t good enough and if he has a part to play then we are in deep trouble.

Talking of Angus Gunn, this from BBC's match report last night . Ouch!

"When it broke to Vini Jr the best efforts of Angus Gunn in goal could not stop him. In his own moment of terror, Gunn acted like a man jumping out of a cupboard trying to spook somebody. The Brazilian just took it round him and tapped it home."

bit like my memory of Taylor in our last premier league season - jumped in front of the oppo player, with arms wide apart to block him, effectively saying go past me if you are good enough, and as every player in the premier league was good enough, they did

You'll be surprised. He'll be apart of our squad, no question of that.

This feels relevant so I'll leave it here even though the op was very Scotland centric.

This short thread so far doesn't hate on Hirst but does have a lot of lines of reality about it.

Where I would go further at this point is that I honestly believe his time with us is now up. I think GON will want to give him a chance as one of those that got us here, but we have struggled in that forward department, and despite his actual goal return, in truth it wasn't high enough last season and I think his ceiling is an upper championship level. I think having him kick around as third choice because of loyalty may be the type of thinking that holds us back. We need a bit of a siege mentality to some regard when looking at what happened last time we were in this position.

Equally there are areas of the team we are well stocked and we may not need to use our funds to develop, increasingly I do worry though and at a risk of contradicting myself I'm hearing more and more discourse that we don't have a Premier league ready squad, and I wonder quite how much upheaval is required.

If we do fall down the line of taking a whole front line including selling George, offloading the disaster signing that is akpom and AAH our funds and scouting resources will be tested like never before in terms of ability.

Its been good having George, but it's time for someone else to enjoy him before he gets frustrated with a lack of play time or the fans turn in the event of a poor return from him.

Didn't read it due to the early use of the phrase "hate on."

Yes, I think so too. If we get a 3rd striker better than Hirst we'll have done well.

He'll be much more suited to the way we will set up in the Prem and running the channels and into space. The low blocks of the champ were just not his game whatsoever.

For me he was very impressive in his limited PL appearances, go rewatch his efforts at Chelsea and Everton. Did not look out of place at all.

Agreed. Also the possibility we play with two up top, in which case he'll play a part in most games.

I think it's more the things he's been good at are more running in behind, then bringing others into play that way just haven't happened this year as everyone has sat in deep against us.

He's not the best when dropping in and taking to feet etc, games like Coventry at home and Norwich away where teams actually tried to give us a game he was very good - a style should be more suited to the PL for us as a smaller team in the league

I think most of us would've been happy with just being at a World Cup. Of course he'd had wanted to actually play but I imagine it will still have been a fantastic experience for him and hopefully one that can be a positive for us.

QPR are better than Haiti though and Hirst played extremely well in that game. None of the Scottish forwards this tournament have shown even a glimpse of that level of talent. Shankland might have been tearing Falkirk and St. Mirren a new one, in a one team league that was only threatened by the almost almost always winner Celtic having appointed a moron as a manager, otherwise Hearts would have never been near it. But the Championship is a higher level than the SPL. As for Dykes, I'd question the sanity of any international manager taking him.

While I agree the Hirst isn't on the level of the top international forwards, he's played football at the top level in this country and hasn't shamed himself. Despite all the groans he had a decent season for us too, and that was playing in a role in McKenna's system that's exhausting and demands a lot from the man up top - which isn't just about scoring goals. Ivan also put a decent shift it, and he wasn't scoring for fun either, that was the job for Jaden and Clarke. That's the system we played, although a large chunk of out support still think its the 70's where there's two up top, and a centre mid who score the goals and that's what Hirst and Taylor get judged by, because they aren't Wark and Mariner, basically.

No sportsman worth his salt is happen to just be taken, given that our George does have a bit of a competitive edge and sportsman ego, I doubt he was happy watching Lyndon Dykes do absolutely nothing up top, from the side lines. He will probably know, having taken up the Scottish shirt, this was likely his only ever chance to play at a World Cup.
