Someone posed the question recently in relation to the World Cup asking what sets some of the more successful, technical teams apart from England.
Futsal is a massive part of football culture in those countries, and I have seen first hand how that imbeds technical skills and awareness in kids from an early age.
The FA invests a total sum of a BIG FAT ZERO into futsal in the UK, and I think thats a big failing.
Kids get more touches of the ball in Futsal, and its an all year round sport thats not impacted at all by weather.
I think the FA should consider investment in Futsal to improve the wider game. [Post edited 5 Jul 11:22]

I don’t know what the FA have or haven’t invested in, but a lad in a team I used to manage was part of the futsal team for his university - they played in a league, had opportunities to play abroad etc. |  | | |

It does exist in England, but is very niche.

The reasons for why there is more investment in Futsal by other national FAs is not because it is seen as a mechanism to improve skills and enhance the 11 a side game, it is because those FAs see value in Futsal within its own right.
Also worth noting the the FAs recent announcement of FutureFit seems to be moving grassroots football towards small sided matches and increased touches, and it may be that starts further interest and funding for Futsal. |  | | |

There was an FA organised futsal league in Ipswich for a few years (Monday nights) which we (my work team) won in one of the early seasons. Got much harder when a team of Portuguese lads joined the league and turned up with a full subs bench and a manager every week.
It’s a brilliant game though and as you say prioritises playing at a higher technical level and moving the ball quickly. |  | | |

I don't think you can replicate Futsal just through small sided matches.
The FA should also see the value of Futsal in its own right, its a win, win. Its all year round, great technically, and doesnt have some of the toxicity of grass roots. ....and my lads play grass roots as well as Futsal. [Post edited 5 Jul 13:43]

My son did FDS years ago when he was a kid. Smaller, heavier ball to encourage touch, technique and short passing rather than lumping it. Definitely helped him. Coaches bought into a franchise I seem to remember - we had to buy loads of kit! |  | | |

I've been banging on about getting a Futsal pitch or two installed at PR/Playford Rd for some time. I totally agree with everything you've said, just one of the reasons why countries have sped past the one that gave the world football. We're stuck in the past here. Well let's hope that " FutureFit " happens very soon and not in the future. Though as it's to do with the FA, I wouldn't bet a mortgage on it happening at all. Should have been happening 20 years ago or more. Futsal does have value within it's own right, it also most certainly has value as a teaching mechanism for youngsters. Not to mention plenty of pros who have the speed of thought of a sloth and the turning circle of 20 ton lorry. | | | |
