Burns staying ... Kasey McAteer going on loan? 17:24 - Jul 5 with 3326 viewsBellevue_Blue

To me this was an either or situation ...

I can't see a situation where we don't sign someone to start and I can't really see a situation where we use three squad places on Right Wingers that GON does not use as frequently as KM.

Even if they were both pencilled in at RWB, that's already three with Johnson and you'd argue we need a specialist wing back if we play that way.

I think he's got a possible high ceiling so given he doesn't count towards the squad count it's probably worth keeping him around and training with the better players we will have in the squad compared to any team he goes on loan to.

He might be needed more than we think if there are injuries etc.

Yeah, six of one and half a dozen of the other for me. A loan seems the normal route but the argument to stay and learn/get game time where possible is strong too.

I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. Last year would have been tough with moving to England and the pressure of the price tag. There’s a good chance we’ll see a very different player over the next 12-24 months.

A new manager with a clean slate might be just what he needs to rebuild his confidence. He looked like a different player towards the end of the season when he finally found some confidence and form.

Yes. He was one of, if not our best player at the end of the season. That should stick in people's minds. He's physically excellent too, important, as we know, for the PL.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

This is absolutely true and I am total agreement. He got us over the line in the end with some key performances.

However, with Wes being re-signed that is already one slot in the squad taken.

So if we do keep Mcateer around we then have two options ...

A) Not sign anyone on the right and go into the season with WB/ KM
B) Sign someone and still use two squad slots on back-up RW's (A position that GON does not tend to use. They are either RWBs or R10's)

Both of those seem pretty unlikely to me ... that is why I said I think it is probably an either/ or situation.

I also think there's a chance that GON will play wing backs often, and sign a star RWB, which means both Burns and McAteer might have less game time, but also that there might not be a need to sign a RW for the (fewer) times we play with one.

Apparently GON has played with two "wide" 10's previously (source: KOA) so that might actually suit him being that right-sided 10 where he is able to shoot with his left foot from a more central location.

I wonder whether keeping Burns gives an indication of how GON will look for us to play i.e. wingers who get to the byline and put a cross in rather than Egeli and Clarke/Philogene who like to cut inside and shoot
