Back from my lunchtime wander and there were surveyors with machines measuring Portman Road and with markinga on the ground. Think they were from Randalls.
Presumably prepping for building work there with the footprint of the new Cobbold moving back towards the car park.

Well if its supports sit on the new car parking spaces or the fanzone a huge tier would be achievable. Which is where any new supports or footings would have to go as there isn't anything to support expansion in the new facilities currently under development. Everything would have to be built over it and let light into the back of the west.

Not saying it's going to happen, but is it possible the club are considering removing the existing upper tier in the West Stand, then rebuilding the upper tier with a new roof and an additional 4,000 to 6,000 seats?
I think I'm right in saying this wouldn't impact the work already done on the lounges and executive boxes, but would mean the new press box would have to be replaced. |  | | |

Yes that is the case. Ashton has hinted at it repeatedly. I have been told that a plan exists but it's now highly dependant on what happens with a new arena building on the fan zone. Something Ashton mentioned this summer and is the reason that Ipswich are looking to absorb land from the junction by the bus depot

Was told by someone at the club (around 18 months ago) that the plan was originally to rebuild Cobbold but the club has pivoted to initially adding a new tier to the West. Would be a self-supporting structure - as per Lurcher comments - built behind the existing stand. The new structure would create a fourth tier, around 4000 additional seats, and extensive space for hospitality lounges.
With new SCR rules, the club will not want to lose any matchday revenues, so adding in new seats and hospitality before dismantling the Cobbold is key. [Post edited 7 Jul 10:11]

Anything larger than that and you'd then be looking at shifting roads around. If you went northwards and wiped out that section of SAR Way, (Although let's be honest, I still call it Portmans Walk) you've then got the problem of cutting Alderman Road off. You'd either have to build a new road to link it, or put it back to connect with Handford Road like it was originally.
Besides which, I'm not sure there's the demand for anything bigger than that when the O2 is less than two hours away by train. [Post edited 7 Jul 10:32]

If you look at what is being developed now it is just a concrete base with rebar and no piling. It's a deep base, the excavated hole is deeper than the men that were pictured standing in it a few weeks back, but it wouldn't support another tier. However it might be able to support another 2 or 3 floors, filling the void under a new tier.
