Really? I thought it was Thatcher's fault?

We'd be weathering it a lot more easily if the government had any assets, that's for sure.

But the wealthy are hoovering up assets! That's not bullshit.

Stevenson is important in making people aware of a system that is not working for them.

where's your evidence that in the uk the distribution of wealth has worsened?

figure 1 here for example:

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

There isn't really any evidence for changing inequality since a large decrease post WW2.
Living standards for the poorest have continually increased. Literacy levels, infant mortality, pensioner poverty, you name it really. All in spite of capitalism apparently.....

there's a tendency to read us data and assume that it applies to the uk.

That's not really what's meant by inequality though.

What people are talking about is the disparity in wealth between the top couple of % and the rest, which is now fairly extreme. Which is a function of asset prices ballooning while real wage growth has stagnated.

What you're talking about is simply improving living standards over time - which I agree with btw, capitalism is, imo, the best system we have.

where does 3b refer to a change in wealth inequality? you get the difference between 'level of' and 'change in' ?

Really?!

I don't think the fact asset prices have risen while wages have stagnated is really up for debate, do you?!

But since you ask:

https://www.oecd.org/en/data/d

https://www.bloomberg.com/news

https://www.businessinsider.co

Worth noting even Larry Fink, Blackrock founder, also said this in his last annual letter:

"The massive wealth created over the past several generations flowed mostly to people who already owned financial assets. Now AI threatens to repeat that pattern at an even larger scale."

none of those links contain any evidence of changes in wealth distribution in the uk. you've searched for for wealth inequality and found one article about the us, one about the world, and one which contains no uk data.

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/inequa

"Between 2011 and 2019, the average UK household’s wealth grew by about £4,000, according to new analysis of official statistics that we at the Fairness Foundation commissioned recently. Those in the poorest 10% of households continue to have no wealth at all – many are in debt. By contrast, the average person in the top 10% of households was £280,000 wealthier over this period. It’s a stark contrast and we found that, overall, the wealth gap in the UK has grown by 50% over these eight years"

click on the first link labelled 'new analysis of official statistics' and go to the data by decile from ons.

that data is the basis on which inequality is measured and you'll notice all the lines are pretty dead straight. there is no evidence at all of a change in inequality from that data.

the quote is confusing absolute changes (£) with percentage changes which can only be intentionally misleading. if everyone's wealth changed by the same percentage, measured inequality would not change, but those in the top decile would of course see their wealth rise by more in absolute terms than those in the bottom decile.

Just so I fully understand, what point are you making here?

UK real wage growth has barely kept pace with inflation in the last 15 years post GFC, while asset prices have generally ballooned as a function of zero interest rates in that time.

That's just at an aggregate level, there are even worse regional disparities.

What is it you're objecting to? Because the above are facts.

i'm making the point that people who say 'inequality in the uk has risen' need to actually provide evidence of that rise. (my implication of course is that there isn't such evidence).

note that evidence of stagnant real wages or rising asset prices is not evidence of rising inequality (either in terms of income or wealth).

equally the fact that inequality has risen in the us isn't evidence that the same thing has happened in the uk.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Sir, the middle class are about to be eaten.

Of course it has risen!

Income and wealth taken by richest continues to rise.

"Of course it has risen!"

then evidence for the uk will be easy to find. the fact that you believe it to be true doesn't make it true.

edit : the first chart here is clear evidence that uk wealth inequality hasn't changed.

The idea the plebs should shut the f4ck up cause they've never had it so good?

I mean they do own 0.01% of the country's wealth. What more do they feck1n want?
