It’s fantastic for him, he won’t be short of offers if he’s fit next summer, and he’ll never have an opportunity at this level or even close.
He’s earned the right you could argue, but even more so, so did Sam, Mass Cam etc etc etc
Why didn’t they get opportunities IF were a club that values sentiment and rewarding people, more than success.
Will it compromise our chances of staying up. Yes. How could it not. Our 25 is very poor at the minute, resources are finite as are squad places, and every £ spent and position taken needs to add huge value to even have 1% chance of staying up.
But. GON knows him, it’s adds continuity and maybe makes the transition easier for GON to have some links to the group, that’s not possible or easy to measure and will add value.
Suspect if GON didn’t have a relationship with him already, he’d be gone.
It also signals perhaps a sub optimal window.., if we had a world class right option and 10 new signings lined up, he’d wouldn’t be here.
Glad for him. What an experience for him. Disappointed for the club, it’s not elite, not what others do at this level in our position, where every point will be like a cup final, but based on how our expensive flops, haven’t been as good as the pennies legacy group (he’s probably a £100k best option after we spent £50 million to replace him!!!) then it’s not the end of the world.
Giving the same people and process another £50 million to replace him probably would end the same way .., McAteer, Walle, Akpom, we really have been awful at recruitment at times., add Sammie Johnson etc, none bad players at all, just a billion light years off this level, when our completion find world class talent for less money.

Can see both sides.
I am sure he could have tied up a 3 year deal in the Championship. He loves the football club, he loves the area, to have another chance at PL, it could also be seen as a no brainer for him. Will he ever get the chance at PL football if he left us this year, probably not?
Let's be honest, on last year, he is still by far our most effective RW out of the 4 we have at the club, he still sits top of that pile.

Not sure on Mass.
Wes is tactically very astute, I think that, along with still having pace and having played at RB will give O'Neil some good flexibility on the pitch when/if needed.

For personal reasons he's probably best at his age to fight for all he's got to stay here. He's been so important to us. Leave now and he's going to want a top championship club to move to, get promoted again and he may be in the same boat in a years time being shipped on again.

They ALL left because we wanted them to. I suspect GON knowing him and wanting a connection to the group is the only reason.
Not sure suggesting he’s not good enough, when he 100% isn’t and I haven’t met a single person who thinks he is, ever. When the club clearly didn’t want him before GON, is against the club.
Seems very inline with the clubs thinking, hence no deal before now…, it’s probably instructive of where our window is. 22 points last time at this level, adjusted for what we spent it’s the worst season in premier league history.

I actually think his best game for us in the Prem was Chelsea at home when we played 3 at the back and Wes played RWB. So could well be in the thinking |  | | |
