I just saw that on another platform. The power of that beast is terrifying, magnificent and awesome in equal measure. To think the USA was home to millions of them to the point where valleys were black with them and they were almost hunted to extinction.

Wishing the tourist a full and rapid recovery.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Lucky not to be killed I agree.

It was the way he just ran around the bush like a Benny Hill skit that did me

Which is why there are signs all over the park about staying well clear of the Bison and the Rangers have a real go at people who ignore them.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Bend down to pick up a rock and you make yourself smaller. He soon realised that making himself smaller was a mistake.

I haven't found it to work like that although I'm only talking about dispersing cattle and dogs from personal experience (and mainly to threaten dogs, the one time I got severely bitten I had been tossing a stone from hand to hand and should have thrown it) but I have seen a ranger clear a water buffalo from our path in Hluwhle-Imfolzi National Park in South Africa by hurling a few rocks at it.

The whole video is a bit weird in my opinion, especially his imprecations for the cougar to go back and 'eat your babies'. Had he already disturbed some cubs / What was he up to ?

The apex predator in all his terrifying glory. “Oh sh*t, fk, oh fk, oh no, grrr, sh*t, oh fk” *runs away*

I behaved similarly when I stumbled upon a pair of porcupines walking up our drive. Terrifying I tell ya.

If that happened in Swansea it would be hedgehogs, wouldn't it ?

He does brilliantly, in my opinion. Cougars usually attack the back of the neck, so he keeps his eyes on it at all times and walks backwards, steadily.

If he had tried to run backwards he would have fallen.

If he had tried to bend down to pick up a rock, the cougar would have closed the gap before he had his hands on one.

He is talking to himself as much as to the cougar. "I'm big and scary" is a reminder to himself as to how to act. The advice is to make as much loud noise as possible, and it doesn't matter whether he says "Go back to your kids" or recites the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody, the cougar can't understand what he is saying!

I suspect he is saying "Go back to your kids" because subconsciously he knows that is his only hope, and to remind himself that he had stumbled on the cubs and that the cougar was only behaving naturally. (The cubs are the very small moving things right at the beginning, I think)

He was incredibly fortunate to survive unscathed, but did pretty much what the survival manuals tell you to do, to the letter.

On the other hand, he was incredibly unfortunate as he was on what looks like a heavily used and maintained main trail, and the cougars should keep their cubs away from it, usually.

There's a saying in the Rockies: if you ever see a cougar, it's already been watching you for twenty minutes.

Which is chilling!

I've seen him interviewed and he says that what wasn't clear from the video is that he was walking backwards and uphill. Another thing he says is that when it lunged aggressively towards him, it was no more than a couple of meters away. I got the feeling bending down to pick up a rock was not an option.
