Tuchel will get brickbats…. 22:49 - Jul 15 with 1550 viewsunstableblue

… and deciding a low block was a great idea deserves critique - Argentina are no Mexico or Norway.

But, BUT… our team after our goal looked absolutely shattered, Rice could barely run, Kane the same, Jude battery gone.

I think Tuchel thought ‘my team is gone here, there’s no spark or energy left, let’s protect the lead’

Abuse him, maybe. And could he have used his bench better, probably.

But as with everything it’s not black and white.

You're right in that - we put in a hell of a lot in the first half, pressing all over and doing it well, winning the ball loads and forcing the Argies into loads, I mean loads, of mistakes.

But then the manager needs, from the start, to have a plan to replace those players who've burned out in the press. He didn't. As someone else said, Mainoo and Rashford, Toney, Saka etc. Not a pedestrian Kane and a shagged out Bellingham and Rice. Parked 30 yards out. Really sh!t management.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

The defeat is on Tuchel. His tactics tonight were bewildering and doomed to fail if the argies found an equaliser.

He was lucky in all previous three knock out games and it ran out tonight.

He is a good coach and I suppose he could have learnt enough for next time, but I feel he should go.

My overriding take out is I really detest Guy Mowbray.

Rice should have been subbed at half time and Kane after the goal.

Konsa for Gordon killed us. Gordon is a butcher's dog. Hasn't looked like flagging the whole tournament. Chelsea fans will tell you Reece James can't play weekend-midweek. Just swap like-for-like at right back instead! Feel like we finally found our best front four, and then abandoned it too early. Same story for the past 25+ years. England take lead, make overly-defensive subs, and get dumped out of tournaments. Limped over the line vs Mexico & Norway, but can't do that against the best teams. Agree tonight is all on Tuchel.

Reignite the spark

Imo bring on a cm and saka first. Get the ball to saka and let him get at them. Something may or may not have happened but wed have reignited the spark.
Gordan could have carried on being an ankle biter and helping spence whilst also being an outlet.

Kane needed to come off. But thats risky and not something england managers do.

Would be more compelling if a crazy run of injuries had reduced us to a bench of defenders. I wish that had been the case actually as it would have made the abject surrender easier to take.

2 good halves of football in 7 games.

That’s not great for Tuchel’s ‘genius’

I’m no hardcore England fan, I’d be more down about Ipswich conceding a corner than England losing. But the way Tuchel managed that game was one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever seen, it was so painfully obvious what would happen! It’s entirely on him.

Worth noting that Rice was involved in our goal tonight by driving forward at pace, i'd have kept him on, not saying he was great but just his presence makes me feel better about the England team.

Lets not bring on Saka or Madueke but "fill the gaps" at the back? He got it wrong and should indicate something along those lines, he seems to want to let players be the focus. He had us playing well.

Changing them for ‘some’ players with pace to pose a counter threat didn’t seem rocket science even at the time.

He blinked.

He panicked, went for what’s worked against poorer sides, but with 30 to go it looked odd at the time - pace, especially as their defenders were tired, on yellows, not the best 1 on 1.

You’re right that it’s easy with a cuppa in hand in the sofa .., but it looked like someone who wasn’t thinking clearly and seeing the game in front, but instead had a plan in mind .., we were awful after we scored, partly Argentina stoooed messing about, and partly our tactics.

We’d have scored again on the break.., nothings certain but allowing them to play with no threat at all - no wonder they looked full of confidence.

At the very very least, get Saka on immediately after they equalised to give us some drive back, because it was so painfully obvious what was going to happen.

The problems were terminal before the equaliser.

The tactics were disastrous.

We could have lucked out for a 1-0, but it was odds against and we were never going got get ahead again after a leveller.

Felt like we didn't even try though didn't it? Totally agree with you, but 11 minutes passed before it seemed to occur to Tuchel we might want to try something other than sticking Dan Burn up front.

Btw how bad was that final 3 minutes

We had about 6 chances of getting the ball into the box and each one hit the first defender

Our best crossers of the ball:
Saka,
Madueke,
Rice,
Gordon.
All absent in those minutes. Manager didn't have them on.

One statistic I don't think I'll forget in a hurry, and I wouldn't even have believed had I not heard and seen the proof. Between our goal and their winner which spanned 37 minutes, we had 12% possession. I'm well aware and have said so myself that it's what you do when you have possession that counts. Well, we had hardly any at all and did even less with it. Shocking final 40 minutes or so. Maybe previous efforts took their toll, but Argentina had to go the wall and back more than once before. Not my favourite team by a long way, but by god I admire their " stickability " and the fact they just never, ever, give up. I'm afraid the facts are, most of our players fall short at the very, very, highest levels.

My two cents... and yes being Irish the house around me was cheering Argentina on. However I do agree Tuchel played way too safe tonight.

The first goal tonight was critical, as whoever scored it would retreat back to their goal line. Perhaps the phrase scoring too early is apt

Post England's goal the whole team retreated back to the box and couldn't get put. That is tiring in itself and too much weight was on Bellinghams shoulders and Kane was supplementing the midfield hence no out ball imo.

As soon as it was 1-1, Tuchel had to try and wrestle the momentum back and while a gamble some pace up front and fresh legs in the midfield would have made a difference. Just feel things were too safe and keeping what we have.

Bellingham would make it into any of the top 4 teams and did soo much great work for the team this tournament. Equally Rice was cooked in the first half and brave decisions needed to be made re. Kane...

Personally (and you may all disagree) England are a great counter attack team. But just like in Boxing if you take too many punches... and the manager did not adjust tactics....add in new threats and some legs for an out and protecting the ball in midfield. The sucker goal late on with no time to recover was on the cards.

But unfortunately this is sport and footie, commiserations everyone.

Mainoo has played zero minutes favouring Reece James in there

We didn't pick Trent or Cole Palmer etc
