I’m not a huge Philogene lover either, but he’s clearly a much more technically proficient footballer who reguarly displays a higher footballing IQ than Maeda. I am actually surprised so many appear to rate Daizen so highly! I think they rate him higher than most Celtic supporters I know, haha!

Seems highly rated by Celtic fans on Reddit. I rate him highly based on what i've seen. Would love to see this one get done.

Last season he didnt even really start trying until the 2nd half of the season as he wanted to leave. Looks so fast, unbelievable at pressing defences, a total nuisance. Also has a tidy finish on him. Celtic fans think he's too.good for us. No wonder we want a quick deal Sign him up before the likes of fulham, Bournemouth and Brentford get in there

Hmmm, think I’ve maybe come across as one of these ‘negative’ views- but I don’t intend to be, I love him at Celtic, especially for that wild season where he got 30 odd goals (bit of an outlier) but he isn’t a guaranteed starter with the bhoys and his technical weakness really makes me wonder how he will manage in the premier league- on a freebie I’d consider it but only in the right team/set up- playing the right role. Just having seen him play a lot and having watched a lot of SPL, I do wonder how exactly he’s going to cope with the Premier League. Heard Joe describe him on Blye Monday as the best player in the SPL, which made me chuckle- he’s not even the best player at Celtic, although I’m not sure he was being entirely serious. All those clubs you suggest we need to beat to the signature have actually decided previously not to pursue him, after showing an initial interest. [Post edited 21 Jul 0:15]

Watch Celtic a lot granted from the sofa as opposed to being there, Maeda probably is the hardest working attacker in terms of pressing defenders i can recall but not a natural finisher. Goalscoring rate is lower than a natural forward as Celtic often play him as a LM/LF, can score some sublime goals but equally liable miss some very presentable chances. When playing LM he is not a great crosser of the ball. If a low fee then maybe worth a punt simply on work rate and pace. My concern though is he is not a premier league number 9, he is not a 10 unless wide left and with Philogene/Clarke/Mehmeti already in the building then opportunities appear limited and with talk of 3/5 at the back and Davis pushing on, less so the opportunity for Maeda. A signing based on hassling opposition defenders.

£8 million seems a stretch was assuming £2-3 million. Great effort but not technically the best, fans will love his chasing and his pace, less so the failure to beat keepers on one on one's. We'll naturally will back him to the hilt but surprised re fee especially as last year of contract.

If he can run really really fast a lot and cause a bit of havoc then given the limitations in the current squad pace wise that will add something different. He can't be totally rubbish, he has 30 games for Japan under his belt and scored against Sweden last month. You never know.

£8m is sod all these days for a PL club. We've seen Championship clubs spending that on average players this summer.

Exactly, Chelsea just paid £118m for a player we have been in for before, so the whole thing is bonkers basically. Is Morgan Rodgers £110m better at football than this guy, we will soon find out. Marketing wise this player is probably worth how however many 100's of 1000's to us with the Ed Sheeran connection in terms of shirts, merch and subscriptions.

Colleague is a Rangers fan. He is pretty pleased that Maeda is leaving Celtic - super energy, he actually thought his finishing was pretty good - but I guess that might have been on the basis of recent history. He thought the fee would be nearer £20m. For him it slightly balances the fact that they have brought in Ben Godfrey

Philogene is leaving, and Memeti isn’t PL quality. This guy has Champions League experience, to take a top player from Celtic (I get the SPL isn’t all that but Champsions League to relegation battle) would be a big coup for a promoted side.
