Embolo link on 21:35 - Jul 23 by Len_Brennan

Are you a big fan, feel he is a top quality finisher, who would be a big success for a newly promoted side in the Premier League?

I think he's looked pretty decent whenever I've seen him and I'm realistic about who we can sign.

Given you think he's not good enough, why don't you give some examples of the calibre of striker you are expecting us to sign?

At £13m, he would be a steal.

He’s big, powerful, he’s a real threat, not always the cleanest but always a handful. I don’t know how anyone would turn their noses up at Embolo.

I remember him more from his Gladbach days to be honest, but other than 23/24, he seems to have racked up 30+, 40+ games a season.

I didn't realise having an opinion on one particular footballer would compel me into becoming a worldwide scout for numerous others.
I have been aware of Embolo for a number of year & have been amazed that Switzerland haven't unearthed a few alternative strikers to take his place in the matchday squad, but they really haven't.
I can't speak as to what you regard as being "pretty decent", but I suspect you chose that term to be deliberately vague as to his abilities & therefore his potential in a Premier League team. I have never been impressed with him in games I've seen - maybe once I thought he did ok - and I certainly was not impressed with his finishing. That is my opinion, having seen him on a number of occasions; feel free to disagree with me, but I'm not sure where you saw all these performances of his that impressed you, via a better sports package than I have obviously.
We have George Hirst, who is 'a handful', & we didn't take up an option on Ivan Azon, who also is a handful; both of them can score goals & have/would score in the PL given the games, but ultimately we need better this season, because needing 3,4 or 5 good chances to score 1 goal won't be good enough; PL defences just don't give up that many opportunities & newly promoted sides don't tend to create very many either.
Unfortunately, I see Embolo in that category of forward, who needs to miss a few chances to score one, so while he certainly has a physicality that would be an asset, I believe his shooting & decision making would frustrate us greatly.

As for being realistic about who we can sign, I think we have the finances & the ambition, this transfer window, to make higher value forwards realistic targets still. We have in excess of £150m at our disposal this time around, with more than £100m of it still available, so I can certainly see us spending £25m+ on another centre forward. Similarly, we could look to tempt an experienced PL forward where the fee could be almost nominal, but the wages be a premium. I agree with those who suggest that we missed a trick with Rual Jimenez, who I would rate far higher than Embolo, even at their respective ages.

Poll: If we go up, which new striker would you like us to sign?

I guess we will see who we manage to get then, if we can tempt someone better then that's great but I think we need to be realistic about who is likely to come. Emersonn cost 24m and that is based pretty much on potential. Someone who is the convert a greater percentage of chances may be out of our league.

If we land someone significantly better then I will be very pleased.

Fair enough.
And if we do sign him, I'll wish him well & be delighted to be proven wrong when he performs really well & has a big impact on our season.

Most strikers need 3-5 good chances to score 1 goal. Raul Jimenez scored 5 goals from open play last season from 70 shots (another 4 pens), Breel Embolo scored 8 from 41, which is pretty good.

Unless your striker is Erling Haaland or Jamie Vardy, they're likely going to miss 80%+ of the chances you make for them.

I understand some of the concerns but at some point we may have to take a gamble on someone with the ability to spike for half a season to a season. I thought Calvert Lewin was a crock but he managed to put a season together that kept Leeds in the PL.

That's where I am at with this type of signing.

If we can get 10 - 15 goals out of them out of a full season then that is going to be a massive help.

Where else in the current squad do we have 10 PL goals from, guaranteed?

I'm ok with this type of buy.
It seems he has had some injury problems, but a guaranteed goal scorer at PL level isn't going to come here. Sunderland last season went with Brobbey, he played in the Dutch league, not a top level league, but he adapted. Ok didn't have as good a first PL season as Delap, but in many ways Delap was an amazing one-off.

Now while I only know a few Arsenal fans, all were amazed Xhaka played as many games he did before he was injured, as he was picking up niggling injures regularly at Arsenal. Maybe that move away from the PL helped Xhaka get fully over those injuries - who knows. Look at Dominic Calvert-Lewin, spent most of his last 3 seasons at Everton injured, moved to Leeds and hardly missed a game.

Embolo has the experience we need experience in the forward line.

Look at when we had Moore for that Championship run in, if he missed a chance it didn't worry him, but younger players can panic and they snatch at the next chance.

Can't say I know a lot about the guy but looking at this he looks good in tight spaces and pretty strong with good feet

Yeah, but it was an attempt to get Parades booked. Which gets an immediate pass.

I’m surprised that I haven’t seen anyone linked with Karim Konate- there’s a top finisher! He was at Red Bull Salzburg, last I looked- well worth a look.

Blimey, would have thought he could have circumvented playing in places like Turkey and headed straight to Spain, Italy, France, England or most likely- Germany.

Can't see anything at the moment for that, Galatasaray have made an enquiry, which might prompt other clubs to come in. There's some Barcelona fan prompted chat, but nothing as substantive as the Turkish interest.

With his injury record and lack of experience here it feels like a perfect 2nd striker option rather than number 1.

But I think we've already signed one of those. Unless we shift Hirst out for 10m and sign Embolo for 12m which would be good.

XX, Embolo, Emersonn

The way Championship clubs are spending money, I've got a suspicion we might see this summer as a good time to try and bank a good profit on Hirst.

Yeah in a world where Azon is 7.5-9m then Hirst becomes pretty valuable.
