| How many more signings? 13:01 - Jul 26 with 3324 views | Nutkins_Return | Seen a quite a few saying that 8-9 more after this keeper is in (or maybe including the keeper). Other than youth signings that I wouldn't count my best guess would be another 4 + replacing any first teamers who leave (e.g. Philogene, Taylor etc I wouldn't include non first teamers like H Clarke or Al Hamadi since they weren't in our numbers last year). Just don't see another 8-9. Scherpen will be our 8th signing (6th ex Kipre/Akpom) and just don't see 16-17 signing being the plan. We need: 2x top quality CMs 1x Quality Striker 1-2x Full backs. Think that will be us done. | |

Looking at the fixtures if we were to lose to Sunderland we might not get a chance for a point again until end of October which is brutal but we all know how tough this is. [Post edited 27 Jul 7:44]

Every game is a chance to get a point or 3? You cannot say we stand no chance against cpfc or everton just cos they are tough fixtures We got a point at goodison last time and cpfc have been in terrible form since Christmas [Post edited 27 Jul 8:43]

Cpfc have a new manager, that could see them go either way but form at the back end of last year means nothing with them

However the form correlates with the sale of Guehi, like wolves they continue to sell their best players and it will inevitably have a knock on effect I fully expect them to struggle and wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 more move on from them over next few weeks

| How many more signings? on 07:10 - Jul 27 by jayessess | Think there's a tendency to focus too much on numbers and not enough on quality. Squad depth is an illusion for newly-promoted teams in the Premier League, you just can't get enough quality outside of your best 15 or so players to make much of a difference. Simply put, if we take too many injuries to key players we'll be screwed. Sunderland had just 14 players make 1,000 minutes. That number for Leeds was 17. Honestly, if you occupied our entire budget with 4 of the highest quality players we could find, robust ones with good injury records, we'd be doing ourselves far more good than spreading it across 11 new players. Sunderland signed 15 players last summer - a new starting XI pretty much plus depth in midfield and full-backs. Theoretically we're a cycle ahead so need fewer in. Leeds were perhaps one or two steps ahead of us in squad development upon promotion and they brought in 11. It feels like we've brought in 4 so far, effectively, in comparison to their business. The other three very much fit in your "depth is an illusion" category; they weren't signed to improve our best 15. | | | |

We would need 12 wins and say 4 draws next season to be safe so let's hope we can pick up the odd draw as you quite rightly say, based on last time we are not going to beat this time round Man U, City, Liverpool unless something bonkers happens. I will likely get pelters for this but seeing Al Hamadi not only in our training squad in Spain but playing in the 'match' 2 years after he featured against Liverpool indicates we still need to recruitment heavily and quickly, if we have designs to be a sustainable PL club of course.

Not necessarily oust everyone that is already to here, but to have Premier League quality ready to step in at any moment. I also think a lot will need to leave. Assuming Scherpen is a done deal, I'd say we now need the following: RCB - competition for O'Shea LCB - straight into the team RWB - straight into the team LWB - competition for Davis CM - competition for Matusiwa CM - straight into the team ST - straight into the team (Emersonn/Hirst as able back-up) 7 new signings in total. I'd commit £60-70m to the centre midfield area because it's such a weakness and an area we will be so badly exploited. I would then look to move on: Palmer, H. Clarke, Philogene (for big money to spend on replacement), Al Hamadi, Ogbene, Szmodics, Akpom, Humphreys (Champ loan or sell - if he goes League One he'll never make it here). Starting XI to look something like: ----------------------------Scherpen--------------------------- ------------O'Shea----------Diop----------XXXXX------------ ----------XXXXX-----XXXXX-----XXXXX-----Davis---------- ----------Fatawu----------XXXXX----------Maeda----------

I think if it is a case of get this all in for the Sunderland game that is too much, but, by the end of the window might give a little bit more of a chance. It's just a lot of players to recruit, if Real Madrid needed to sign 8 new players in 4 - 6 week they would struggle to find the right ones at the right fee I am sure. [Post edited 27 Jul 9:42]

Yep, 6 is where I am too. First choice RB/RWB, back-up LB/LWB, 2x CM, ST, and then depending on the preferred formation one of CB, CM or #10. However, it wouldn't surprise me if there are a couple of late opportunistic signings in addition to this right at the end of the window.
