Some of you may recall I posted a short while back about potentially moving back to Norfolk.
Whilst i's and t's still need to be dotted and crossed it looks like it is now a goer and I'm just waiting for official offer confirmation.
With that in mind I'm thinking about where to base myself ans welcome any reccomemdations.
The office will be east of the city and so I'm looking towards the east side of the county.
Current thoughts include Porringland, ludham, Acle, Bloefiele and South Walsham.
Needless to say I'll need to book some time off and refamilliarise myself with the area.
Main things to consider.
1. The cat, somewhere where the traffic isnt too busy, of course everywhere will have its busier and quieter roads
2. Commute, office to be Broadland business park. I dont mind anything up to 35 or 40 mins but wary that traffic into Norwich can be a nightmare.
3. Decent local pub, I'm moving on my own I have a couple of friends still in the area and a few old ones I can look up but would like a community feel where I might meet new people.
Any thoughts on the areas I'm considering and any suggestions for any i have missed?
As an aside I grew up near Wymondham so would look atthwt side of the city too but think I'm setting myself up for a brutal commute.

There are a lot of places which are quiet enough for a ranging cat but none of them are any of the places mentioned except perhaps Upton near Acle. It also has a community owner shop and pub. Easy reach for the offices.
Acle has a Good Beer Guide pub in the Hermitage and an excellent local social club. But no countryside for a cat.
Cantley has another GBG pub the Cock. With the sugar factory closing down in the next few months houses there and at next door Reedham may become cheaper.
I can confirm Reeham has 3 pubs and a station which will be of no use to you to get to work. But it may help you to get to the match.
South Walsham has no surviving pubs. North Washam however has cracking ones.
Gillingham on the Norfolk/Suffolk border near Beccles is out of the way and has two good pubs.
Loddon/Chedgrave to the south east is a nice village with quieter parts and a couple of excellent pubs. |

I live in Harleston and it’s a great little town. I feel like one of the locals now but I’ve been here 20 years but I fell into new mates pretty quickly wirh watching Harleston town, poker and a few random nights out.
I really love the whole of the Suffolk / noroflk boarder abd the river Waveney. The jewel in the crown is Beccles it’s just a fantastic little town . I love it there for so many reasons.

I agree. I don't live there either but it's one of those small towns that has a nice vibe. It has a lot of independent shops, it's well served by buses and trains and has a couple of nice pubs ....and The Caxton Club if you can blag a membership.
We've often thought about moving there. We still might.

yea its got steeped in history. It used to be East Anglias biggest port town.
It has the best out door pool (Lidlo), a ferry (The black dog) its on the broads and has a stunning quayside.
a really nice christmas market, lovely facilities for local football, good Rugby club. Awesome fishing shop. some good shops and decent pubs. | |

Remember back in the day a load of us hiring boats from The Pickerel pub (where the Black Dog Ferry is now) to go to the Locks.
Barmaid or landlady queried one of our party’s age and stuck her hand down his jeans to check! We all got a pint

Agree, you may be able to do it in that time on a Sunday but not weekdays. Can be a real slog from Framingham Feathers to the southern bypass on weekday mornings | |

Poringland resident here so thought I'd chip in...
Lived here for 13 years now across 2 new build homes. In terms of location, it's ideal for me as I work in Lowestoft so 40 minute commute there. Can get into Norwich in 10-15 mins outside of peak times, and it does get congested around school times as the high school is on the main road. Takes an hour-ish to get to Ipswich on matchdays. I can get to Broadland Business park in 15-20 mins but again not sure on peak times.
It has everything you would need from a village really - 2 pubs, 2 doctors, dentist, post office, library, plenty of parks and woods, all the usual takeaways, Tesco etc. The high school also has good sports facilities like racket courts. The only thing missing for me is a gym! Yes, there is lots of new developments, but that is the case in most places around Norwich.
There is a busy main road (30mph) going right through the middle, so not ideal for your cat, but you can find lots of places which are well away from the road. There's also plenty of fields and woods still dotted around. Maybe look out towards the Stoke or Framingham Earl areas for somewhere a little quiter but still within reach of what you need.
A poster above mentioned Alpington - my in-laws live there - there and Bergh Apton very much the opposite in terms of amenities, but they are really lovely quiet villages. My brother lives in Chedgrave which I also saw mentioned. Again, really lovely village with all the amenities but probably a bit far for your commute to Broadland business park.

Don’t know your circumstances but if you’re looking top dollar then Thorpe End would do it nicely
Alternatively, if you’re happy with a new build there’s loads being put up to the North of Norwich with easy access to NDR that would give you a 10 min commute [Post edited 28 Jul 14:44]

Funnily enough I grew up near Wymondham too, went to Wymondham College.
If Poringland is on your radar, how about Brooke, Alpington or Bergh Apron. All a bit quieter than Poringland, Brooke had two pubs, the kings head and white horse. The wheelwrights at Alpington is also decent. No pubs in Bergh Apton but is really quiet and has a manor owned by someone who made substantial money on Only fans if that makes a difference. |
I spent some time in Brooke in the 80’s when my parents moved there.
Hated the place, two filthy ponds (the Meres) and a crap bus service.
I was glad when I was 18 and could move back to civilisation.
