RIP Franco Baresi 07:39 - Jul 31 with 1398 viewsMullet

He was sort of mythical to me as USA 94 was my first proper World Cup I remember well, and Channel 4 was the only way to see players like him.

The definitive Libero of the 90s.

Stunned to read he has died.

Such sad news to hear this, a top player in his day

One of the greatest defenders ever to play the game,

The Milan stop-off on an interrailing trip as a young man included a trip to the San Siro to watch AC Milan v Atalanta. Absolute Rolls-Royce of a footballer...was MOTM for me in a team which included Maldini, Rijkaard, Gullit and Van Basten.

For me he would be in any greatest world 11's, i remember seeing him on ch4 and Italian football in the 90's and he was 36/37 at the time and he was unreal.

If my memory serves correctly, he shut Romario down in that 94 final and he was imperious.

Absolutely, when it comes to your first paragraph.

As regards your second, my memory fails me.

Baresi was an insanely good footballer. It didn't make much sense that he was a centre half as he wasn't very tall at all. Possibly his best attribute is that he understood a game of football like reading a book. He just knew where to be and when and anybody trying anything different he knew before they did. What an absolutely amazing player he was. Back in those days the Italians had all the best players/teams so what he was up against was top quality attacks and he always had a plan to stop them. That Milan team was simply the best for around a five year period and it was amazing that they didn't win more they were that good. OK they won three European Cups, but that doesn't really tell the story of how good he was and Milan were.

RIP Franco.

Captain of Milan for 15 years. Has anyone captained one club for longer?

So saddened by this news. A true LEGEND of our game. The best defender I ever saw. There have been some very, very good centre-halfs down the years, but for me, Baresi was the greatest of all.
R.I.P GREAT MAN. I loved watching you and will forever remember you.
