Are the types of deal we needed last time.

I imagine our wage offers are more appropriate this time round however and why weve been able to do them.

"...but were not prepared to pay the wages."

I am not sure that is either correct or fair. Financially we are in a much better place to be able to pay higher wages than we were two years ago. I don't think we could have done some of the deals we are doing now two years ago, even if players were interested.

We are a slightly different prospect now as well, with players, clearly, being more open to joining us.

I don't think we could have done these deals two years ago, even if we wanted to. We are in a different financial space this time around. So unfair (as posted in the above) to position current deals in that light.

It's smart business but they are also probably won't be viable PL players towards the end of their contracts, will have high wages and not a tone of resale value, hence them being available.

I do like the moves but still a bit safe and not as expansive as I'd like more of a mix personally.

Sunderland signed Sadiki from USG last year for 20M and look at him now, probably worth double and was excellent in the middle of the park and is 21.

Cov have gone down that route Yirenkyi, who has a tone of caps for Ghana and very looked decent when playing against top level opposition international and is highly rated.

Ben Johnson was an experienced PL player with over 20 appearances the season before he joined us. Considering it's our second PL stint in 3 years I'd like to see a bit more of what I mention above.

People obsess over the PL experience too much when the top leagues in Europe have value, younger players and proven do well to come in and will be worth a lot more money as an asset for the club. Stack is another example. I don't mind some "sure things" but want a bit more outside the box thinking from the continent as well.

Aren't Emersonn and Fatawu the same as those other deals, or at least comparable? Young with potential to be great. But they are a risk as you imply, so you can't get 5 or 6 of those. When they work they're a no brainer, when they fail they're like the club had no brain.

Fatawu played in England for 3 years and has games in the PL. I like him for 20M for sure.

Just seems that we are a bit limited to players that have played in the UK or have those connections. Florentino and Fatawu have both been relegated in England this year and we grabbed them, or we have gone for PL players at the end of their contracts, so they are available. I don't actually hate any of the deals, all improve us and with some we know what we are getting but just isn't that expansive outside of UK.

I'd like to be going out and trying to find a Sadiki type to throw in the mix there as well with huge potential upside and young as well. So many success stories African players that ply their trade in Europe.

Out of all the signings, Emersonn is really the only one thus far and the backup keeper that fit this strategy a little more. Even Scherpen was found by Brighton.

We are for sure starting to build something though and overall, a decent window I think and maybe I am just a tough grader lol.

Hopefully a couple of exciting international signings on the cards before the end of the window.

Out of interest did sunderland sign them before of after xaka? Just wondered if they concentrated on experience and them brought in the young players after

Weve got experience in the middle now and the back. One more uptop and i wonder if we then will see some of those types you mention

Xhaka came in quite late.

They got major hits from clubs like Club Brugge, Anderlecht, Union SG, Getafe, NEC Nijmegen etc, all of a very similar profile.

They maybe foreign players but it's still Celtic, Burnely, Fulham, Leicester.

Let's see anyway, as I say I like the vast majority of the signings, and I think both from Fulham will help us immensely but be nice to try something a little different as well.

We got Johnson and Phillips in as experienced Premier League players and Tuanzebe, O'Shea and Muric as less experienced ones.

The problem was we weren't able to get in more experienced ones and those didn't prove anything like good enough. The hope is that the ones we are getting this time around prove to be much better.

Those who remain from last time around will have the experience they didn't have before too.

Sounds good in theory. I’ve no idea if there’s a particular footballing logic to what we’re doing though. Are we signing a particular type of player or just grabbing experience when we can get it? A quick glance at Lukic’s stats doesn’t reveal a particular strength technically (pretty much third quartile percentile for all defensive, attacking, passing stats). I can’t say I’ve ever watched a game and concentrated on him, so have no idea what he could bring. I guess we also haven’t really seen enough yet to know what GON’s looking for.

That’s not to dismiss any of our signings, but remember Johnson had PL experience and struggled to hold down a first team place for large parts of a Championship season. Phillips too, and the less said there the better. I’d take good over experienced any day, whichever league they’ve come from.

TLDR - I think we need to see how we go before jumping to conclusions about how good our recruitment approach is.

Johnsons appearences for west ham are what kenlock had for us in the championship. Surpising.

What i see is an extemely solid cb pro who esp at set pieces will be key
In the fulham lad its the 2nd part of the midfield revamp with more additions to follow and being a player whos been an important member of an established prem side.

Weve got flair in fatawu which you need. I expect another signing there too

For me. Oneil is doing the sensible thing mixing experience with inexperience.

If the window finished tomorrow no it wouldnt look impressive but with plenty of time and plenty of players soon to be available for moves i think jts gonna be exciting.

Would love for us to be buying only players with future value, but the only goal this year is to stay up. We needed virtually a whole squad upgrade this season with a hope that a couple of the previous squad step up again.
If we get another year of prem.money we will only need to upgrade a smaller part of the team which should allow us the spend a higher on a couple of star buys.
Our problem will be the same as the last time in the top flight. We won't have the strength in depth to bring on four subs that are better than the oppositions subs.

We had an advantage in the championship of quality on the bench. But at this level nearly every time will be able to bring on subs of greater value than us.

That last paragraph is what’s holding back my excitement. We’ve got a long way to go to compile a squad that’s going to give us a chance of staying up. It gets a bit better when all the strongly rumoured players get in, yet we still need to find more. And then mould them into a team.

I was overly optimistic last time and that went well lol, so I’m going to reserve judgement for a bit.

It's a weird intangible thing in many ways though, trying to assess transfers. Many can seem good and end up being terrible, others seem bad and end up great. Even after the season is over nobody knows quite what could have been bought instead, whether there was a better way that would have got better results, whether players were the best we could have got, whether we maxed out what we could have achieved.

Last time wasn't great, obviously, but we weren't in a position to do much different due to circumstances, so did we do wrong? This time we may still go down, likely even, but that could be off the back of a decent season where everyone did as well as they could, and were the best players we could have got our hands on.

Tldr, fook knows!

They were far harder to do last time. Established players were never coming to a side that had performed back to back promotions. We were always going straight back down.
