I don't know the first thing about Palacios as a person... 09:25 - Aug 10 with 3541 viewsiaijn

...and I'm aware of my own bias here - he's a member of the Argentinian national team, which hasn't the best reputation atm. But...I'm nervous that a billy-big-b@ll@cks would be the last thing the squad needs when things are inevitably not going well at times this season. We're already aware that someone like Cunha who thinks he's bigger than the club could be a chink in GO'N's armour.

Oh well, probably not gonna happen anyway, but I'll actually be relieved.

World Cup Winner in the centre of the park? Yes please!

From Stephen Ward, Oli Hawkins and Dai Cornell to this...

Generalising a player's character or work ethic based on their country or international squad, especially when someone as notoriously dedicated as Messi is part of that exact same setup, is pure guilt by association.

But as you said you no nothing about him, none of us do my biggest concern is his injury record. But I don't believe it will happen anyway.

Agreed, and I told on myself in my post, it's also just such a big signing...I don't know maybe I think we don't get nice things, so I'm looking for the downside before it's even happened.

I can't vouch for his character personally, but looking at his history at club and international level he has learnt the right to be a bog time Charlie. He's at the peak of his powers, top quality player. I also can't see it happening but if it does I'm fully on board

Personality checks is something MA and formally KM made a point about regularly, I doubt the club would make an investment of any such magnitude without the proper due diligence.

Aside from the fact we have no idea of his character.

If you want Ipswich to go to the next level you will inevitably be signing players with bigger Egos and bigger reputations.

Hope not, 95% because of that injury record - EPL is even more physical? But as already stated, we don’t need a ‘big time charlie’ if he is one.

On the other hand, a "billy-big-b0llocks" with the talent to match and a positive attitude can single-handedly drag a team through a sticky patch. Think Ronaldo or Messi in their primes.

We want players who care deeply if they're not winning. A criticism thrown at some of the Jewell- and Lambert-era squad was that they were not bothered enough (inc. distracted, demoralised or too busy having a laugh) when games went against them*.

As to the Argentine national team's attitude, that is set by the Manager and Captain (plus the overall culture). Hopefully O'Neil has learnt from his Wolves experience. I think O'Shea is strong and Ashton will back them up.

Simply put we might well need a significant signing (Xhaka) like this to achieve our goal this season. I’m sure the club will be trying its hardest regardless. His injury record is what is making this even a distinct possibility imo.

Yeah. I think a key example of this is Enzo Fernandez... far be it for me to stick up for him because he seems a dislikeable chap to say the least... however, he seems a completely different animal for Chelsea than he is for Argentina. He is still spikey and "winner" for Chelsea but far less likely to throw elbows etc.

That is all bluster and PR when it comes to Ashton as has been proven.

Is it? How many "bad apples" have we had in the Gamechanger era so far?

Szmodics is the only one I can immediately think of (and then in one specific area, not attitude on the pitch) - he was sidelined, then moved out pretty quickly.

Thinking back to some of the "characters" we had during Evans' ownership, the club has been remarkably thorough in its vetting.

The Cunha who scored a hat load for them in the first half of the season and vastly outperformed his xG?

I suspect it’s more of an “Ashton” thing than anything else. You’d only have to go back into thread history to tell that I’d suspect.

What about that Argrntine squad ethos and mentality? its coached into them at the footballing level. At a political level Argentine hates England, theres no getting away from it. They all stood behind that politically motivated " flag" didnt they. Is that suddenly just going to disaapear because hes playing for us?

Don't forget this club unceremoniously dispensed with a player of poor character last season...

I think the OP has a valid point worth considering.

Absolutely - we all seem to like the Japan national team's positive ethos when talking about Maeda (and potentially Ueda), and think of it as another tick in the pro column. Surely it should cut both ways. And to be clear I'm only talking about the national teams here, not the country as a whole. I've been to Argentina many times and love it, but their national team have always been questionable attitude-wise, and that's reached a peak in the most recent couple of WC cycles.

Well in terms of the Argentina squad mentality on a football level they won a World Cup, Copa America and then got to a World Cup final. So that's not bad.

In terms of Argentinians hating England I'm not sure that's worth overthinking. Plenty of Argentinian players have played in England and done well. If Julian Alvarez fancies signing for us that would be ideal.

If he signs for us, I'm sure when he first scores he'll rip off his shirt and reveal a T-shirt with the words on it.

"Las Malvinas son Argentinos."

To be correct, they didn't all stand behind that flag, and I've not seen any evidence that Palacios did. It appears to have been instigated by 2 players specifically.

This is trial by association.

We need players who can stand up for themselves. We have been a soft touch for to long, so I see no problem in it at all. Anyway who knows how he will behave, he didn’t play in those games where the problem occurred.

Never going to happen. I expect he'll be gramatically correct and make the adjective agree to the feminine Malvinas: Las Malvinas son argentinas.

Maybe I should have said their cheating, shythousery mentality lol!

Just for balance, I woukd suspect Town have done their due normal checks on all aspects of this player, vas they appear to do for all the players we've signed. But if course we cantbakways get it right. Theres no doubting his pedigree and we be a massive statement of intent by the club.
