Reform want to deport all foreign prisoners to El Salvador 07:54 - Aug 12 with 5473 viewsStokieBlue

Their plan is to take all foreign prisoners currently serving time and move them to El Salvador, one of the most brutal prison systems in the world:

https://www.independent.co.uk/

The policies would seem to be getting more deliberately headline catching in order to distract from the financial investigations at the top of the party. First it was ignoring international law with regards to France and now this.

I thought they were against international people trafficking?

It's all very confusing, isn't it?

Hopefully they're never in a position to action this but the prospect of a Moscow Nige led government having to send 'travelling on my Irish passport' Tommy Ten Names to an El Salavador prison when he inevitably ends up inside again is too good to contemplate.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

More specifically they said they are looking to move foreign offenders abroad into rented prisons which could include El Salvador, so not quite the same thing. Even The Independent didn't frame the policy quite as you suggested.

I wouldn't have thought El Salvador was practical, but renting space abroad could be a practical medium term solution.

I do think we should align to countries like Australia, Japan and Canada in deporting criminals from abroad at the earliest opportunity. I don't imagine too many voters of any stripe would be against this.

Significant UK population growth since 2000 (around 10m) and successive governments failing to build enough prison space is a significant cause of this issue.

The EU signed an agreement this year to deport criminals to foreign hubs in countries across Africa and Asia.

I think that's avoiding the point. They are planning a trip to visit El Salvador to explore the policy and they have an awful prison system with systematic human rights abuses.

The issue is they would even consider that country as an acceptable destination.

I agree, but that's not what you wrote above.

I wrote it was one of the most brutal prison systems in the world and I feel my meaning was pretty clear, others managed to derive it even though my post was made before enough morning coffee.

Not going to get pulled into your nonsense though so I'll leave you to it.

My ‘nonsense’ being to call out the fabricated title of your post and then to provide some thoughts on where I think the government could take policy.

Why would it be any cheaper to rent prisons abroad?

I don’t think it would be. I suppose it could be quicker?
I’m not sure it’s an entirely practical solution.

It's nothing more than a headline grabbing exercise. It's completely impractical and would certainly be challenged in the courts. More deflection from a floundering Farage

And of course court backlogs play a not insignificant part in prison over-crowding.

About 16K people are current held in prison on remand (approx 20% of the total prison population) and apparently about 30%-40% of these do not go on to receive a custodial sentence (case dropped, found not guilty, given a non-custodial sentence, given a suspended sentence, released due to time already served).

"Processing" those people faster through the courts will take time so not a short or possibly even medium term fix but that surely must be one goal. As perhaps is a review of the use of remand in the first place.

I don’t disagree about the practicalities, it’s just that he didn’t write the headline as written/presented. I just mentioned that this is not wholly out of step with what a lot of other countries are doing.

But you did more that by linking immigration with the lack of prison spaces in the UK. Maybe I took you up wrong and you are suggesting moving UK citizens who are incarcerated to prisons abroad. Pretty clear this is a racist policy but that can only be expected from Reform.

Total guess, but given it costs about £60,000 of taxpayers money to keep somebody in prison for a year, if say the planet Tharg offered to take a long term or life prisoner for say £100,000 there’s an obvious financial saving to be had.

I mean, if I'm President of planet Tharg and you tell me "please take on these long term/life time prisoners" because we don't want to keep them in our country, pretty sure I'm going to want to make as much money as possible out of that arrangement.

...and the agreed amount would probably be dwarfed by the legal costs in each case, and the time anyone would still be in the UK whilst the process is sorted.

I'm confused. There are 10,000 foreign nationals is UK prisons. They are not UK citizens. Why is it racist to propose a policy to deport them? Can you please point out the racism? They don't form one homogenous race and I wouldn't propose deporting UK citizens.

As I regularly repeat, I don't vote reform, don't support Farage and won't in the future.

It's very sad that the judicial system has been so hollowed out. It's a total crisis and a huge shame on the last Conservative government. It needs a range of serious solutions and hence not one Reform will be able to fix.

It's an issue that puts the general public far more at risk and quite frankly there should be nothing more important for a government to deal with

do you think farge will be deporting us citizens to el salvador?

it's completely unworkable, and would be subject to decades of legal arguments. another totally unthought-out back-of-a-fag-packet policy in a desperate attempt to deflect from his racism and corruption

El Salvador seems an expensive way to deport people.
Surprised he hasn't suggested Gruinard Island.

I don't think he will be deporting anyone to El Salvador. The headline grab was actually being done by The Independent and the original post rather than Reform.

Put El Salvador to one side, as that wasn't the main thrust of the argument. A plan to deport foreign criminals would be in line with a significant number of other countries. Also, many countries either rent prison space abroad or are considering doing so.
