It’s amazing seeing that team line up how different things are.
At the time it was all change, bomb squads and Cook. I hoped we’d form a competitive team fast because I wasn’t sure how long the new ownership would retain interest. I got none of that right.
Tbh I wasn’t sure about McKenna when he rocked up a few months later either because I’d never heard of him! Got that wrong too.
We’ve been very lucky to witness it. Sadly, my dad was at the point where he didn’t understand what was taking place. He’d have loved the excitement and change of the last five years.
Imagine if we have a good season and can push on. Why not? This week we are surely allowed to dream.

Same my side, my late father would have loved all of this! He missed the 1st promotion season to the PL which was a shame.
This period in our history seems like a life time ago now, it is actually quite surreal.

Surreal is the word I was looking for. Made all the more so by the sadness I felt at the decline and utter lack of a future for the club for so many years leading up to 2021.

Fraser missed a pen against Burton Albion just before this game and never really recovered from it. Just never got going here really.
Harper looked great against Burton too. But we lost that too.
Strange old season that!
Looking at that team, the keeper and defenders went on to serve us well. The rest, bar Jackson who was sub, not. It was very much an interim side.
Bonne was a strange one. I thought he looked ok and hit legend status for mugging off the Wednesday keeper, but somehow he just fell away to the point of not being able to hit a cows rear end with a banjo.
Edit: thought Edwards was a decent player and great character too.

I remember the game well as I stayed in Cheltenham after the game for the night. A really hot sultry night and Bonne missed a sitter which would have put us 2 -0 up. Their manager Michael Duff played a blinder on demolition man as in the second half he took a defender and put 5 in midfield which totally stuffed us!
For the record we conceided both goals from long Ben Tozer throw ins which once yes but twice was unforgivable. And to my mind just proved how far Cook was out of his depth.

Yes, the keeper and defenders went on to form part of the spine of that league 1 and champ promotion side.
Agree about Bonne. Was so exciting when he joined but just lost confidence. But he can say he has scored goals for his boyhood club. Loved his enthusiasm.
Agree about Edwardo too! Infectious character and a really skilful player.
A very likeable side that emerged from the demolition.

They certainly did. What was interesting about that period was that something like 26 players were disposed of. Downes was always going to do well and though patchy, Dozzell has made a career. The rest were pretty much retirement fodder or basically heading for nowhere.
That includes Simpson who looked a prospect and plenty wet the bed when he left. He’s managed to secure a year at Port Vale this summer but it’s a good indicator that not every prospect makes the grade in the very hard world of professional sport.
Of Cooks signings about 50% turned out to be successful. Not a bad percentage and we all know he has an eye for a player. When I think of the ratio of success and failure of transfers since, I doubt it is a lot different, despite the abuse heaped on Ashton, McKenna and the recruitment people by a number of people. And that’s without three promotions. I guess it’s because at higher levels players command fees. That’s hardly the players fault.
Interesting to look at those 2021 players and what an interesting time that was, even if that season was frustrating in the end.
Genuinely thought it was ridiculous that we'd manage to get Tom Carroll in league one. With hindsight there was a very good reason why he was dropping down a division!
