Defense how we feeling? 15:53 - Aug 16 with 2872 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Our starting back 4 last time in the PL was very often;

Axel Tuanzebe, Dara O'Shea, Jacob Greaves, Leif Davis.

It didn’t fair too well at times. Diop is a brilliant signing, so that should help plenty and I know they’ll have better cover from Midfield, so this year should be different in that sense. We’ll be fluid but I just worry that’s not quite been upgraded enough on the left side.

I like Greaves but he kind of fits in that bracket of very good champ defender and questions mark in if a true PL defender for me. Will Diop play LCB in a 4? Not his natural side but guess that will be the plan.

It’s clear we are going with Davis for all his attacking attributes and bombing forward on the transition is such an asset. I know we haven’t got unlimited funds and will be at 150-160M spend by tomorrow night but if we could find some extra player sales I’d love to be going back in from Alessandro at Lille or similar.

Will be interesting to see if the new Strasbourg lad comes in and plays RB from early on as well.

I rate Greaves highly and think he’ll nail down the LCB spot for us this year. He’s got all the physical attributes, strong in the air & tackle and decent with the ball at his feet.

That back four was better than people give it credit for. Three of the four are still here and playing, and Axel could have been if he’d stayed.

The issues were elsewhere really (although Davis did struggle defensively).

Goalkeeper, centre midfield, up front (once Delap went off the boil). And a fair few injuries.

I think that defence was good enough.

Davis will benefit from not having Cajuste in front of him. Hopefully our midfield will give our defence a bit more protection this time around

Depends if we end up,playing five at the back. I think we’d need another CB. I’m not sure whether Kipre is good enough. I’d like to have seen a right back come in.

Have we played 5 at the back or 3-5-2 (which quickly becomes 5 at the back against good opposition) at all in pre-season? Doesn't mean we can't do it.
Leif Davis wold be a much better wing back than full back, but we shouldn't organise out team around 1 player.

That's a good point - Oh for a faster 26 yr old Massimo Luongo!

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Another thing O'Neil seems to be working towards is a squad who press and try to win the ball back high - particularly Maeda on the left. That, if we can get it working, will provide an additional layer of protection for the defence.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Indeed. He just needs - only occasionally - to keep his head more in crisis moments.

I think the midfield will be vital, because right now the back 4 doesn't look good enough. Greaves is inconsistent, Davis still gets caught out of position, and O'Shea may be a better player but not at RB. I cannot see what big difference Outtara will bring. So Luis, Lukic and Matusiwa will have their work cut out. And we still don't have enough in the striker department. I don't want to be gloomy because we've made some great acquisitions (Diop being possibly the best), but not enough in the right places.

I’m okay with O’Shea and Greaves. After all, they were both signed for big money to be Premier League players and I think they’ve gradually improved and gelled with the team. Greaves was being talked up as a future England international at one point. I also think they didn’t get much protection last time out, and Leif Davis was depended on too much for defending, which is not his forte. I feel much more content with Lukic and Florentino in front of them now, and Maeda tracking back from the left.

That said, I wouldn’t mind us signing an experienced LCB, because if it does get too much for Greaves at any point, then it would be good to have someone reliable waiting in the wings. I’m astonished no one has gone in for Mavropanos at West Ham, he seems an ideal option for a bottom half PL club.

Let’s see what happens!

Davis has tended to get caught out because has been expected to get forward and in the Premier League especially we didn't always seem to cover for him. The losing goal away to Fulham springs to mind.

But he was 9th in terms of chances created last tine round, the top rated defender.

It seems from the friendlies that O'Neil wants to play to such strengths, and the formation he has adopted with a back three when we are on attack, or even a midfielder dropping back, will hopefully make us much more secure than the last time if he bombs forward, as will having what looks like stronger players all around the pitch.

Totally agree.

As i said on another post the most successful teams in the Prem have a least one fullback that bombs forward to add options to the attack. Take that away from Town and we lose one of our best creator of chances.
Flipping heck Sir Bob basically invented it here with how he had George Burley bombing forward.

The critical thing is when he does one of the midfield need to drop in there to close the gap.
Kante at Leicester and Chelsea was brilliant at that, our new midfielders will also do that after more time on the training ground.

The main issue I had with Greaves was how easily he went down looking for a foul and often not getting it. If he can stop doing that (or get the fouls awarded) I think he will be fine. He seemed to be able have some very good games interspersed with some less impressive ones. O'Shea was much more consistent last season.

He does look for fouls far too often considering he's supposed to be an intimidating and aggressive central defender. I'd love it as a striker.
