That is the quiet sound of people at work making calls and the fire sale in its infancy before it roars to life later this week and early next in order to get to 25.

We'll have 3 new players by the end of the week; defender, midfielder & striker.

Poll: If we go up, which new striker would you like us to sign?

It always gets a little quieter as the season kicks off.

Everyone is taking stock of the first few performances. Teams that have started well decided they need less or they've started badly and need more. Players who thought they might be involved, suddenly aren't. The deadline is looming, teams are holding out for the best price, buying clubs want to put pressure on the sale etc etc

I always think there is a small lull due to all these factors.

I think they would have to sign a real gun striker to get rid of Wood. He plays very consistently for them for a reason.

Palacios has the feel that it will get done. Leverkusen appear to want €30 million-ish up front and will probably hold firm until we come back to them with a figure close to that near the weekend and it gets done from there. We'll want a striker as well, obviously, and are presumably well down the list or onto a new list by this stage, or maybe revisiting earlier targets. Not sure who, though.

What's your take on the EADT story today that it's not likely to rumble on until the end of the window, and that we're prepared to look elsewhere?

A genuine assessment, or something put out there by the club to try and put some extra pressure on Leverkusen?

Not a prophet, or a stone-age man; just a mortal with potential of a superman.

For strikers, I was hoping we could do what Valencia did with van Oevelen, and sign a player on loan that we missed out on for a permanent deal...but as Carlos Espi came off the bench and scored the winner for Real Madrid at the weekend, think we'll have to move on from that one

From reading Spanish media, it seems like Valencia have paid us a loan fee on top of his wages.

Very strange the KVO thing, I understand the player trading model and that Brighton seem to sell 75 goalkeepers a year for big profit but would think we would need to be more established in the PL for this to become a thing for us as we'd need all the SCR margin we need to try to stay up

The plan has always been to send him out for a year to get experience. Had only one year in the Eredivisie and only one more as a first-choice in the Eerste Divisie. I think a Championship club had been lined up until Walton got injured.

Fairly obvious he's the one that we want to complete the midfield, Leverkusen will be well aware of that. Clubs will always hope things don't go until the final couple of days but they often do, as we've seen. Last year, Town got a load of ongoing deals done and dusted just before the final weekend of the window, so can see similar happening again with Palacios.

Never been the slightest doubt for me since I heard Feyenoord would listen to offers for Ueda. Scored again yesterday for the second game running ( a pen this time ). I'm truly amazed he's still there. Would team up very nicely with his Japanese international team mate Maeda, and be good for both players integration. Go get the guy I say, subject to Feyenoord not asking an absolutely ridiculous fee. Got to be worth up to £35m.

Valencia have a very solid keeper in Stole Dimitrievski so would be surprising if he goes there as the number one glovesman due to his relative inexperience. Can't imagine we'd be happy for him to be bench warming for the loan period so it is a bit of an odd one.

I saw that, but they've been after another keeper all summer. At one point they were keen on Muric. I assume Town must have been given some guarantees he's going to play fairly regularly. If not, I assume he'll be back in January.

Are you sure he is the profile of striker Town want? Obviously, a great goal scorer in Holland but it was notable how quickly EADT quashed that one on the original link.
