Given what’s being paid out for strikers and what Delap potentially has to offer I’d say £40m is easily what he’s worth. But I agree with you - not for us.

I’d set the bar higher than that but agree with the principle. Logically he should be worth less than we sold him for after a crap season. Chelsea took a punt and it backfired. But since when does logic come into player valuations? With the big club + English + PL premiums I’m not surprised at £40M. I’m another who thinks not for us at that price. If we could get him back for £20-25M + addons I’d snap their hand off. But then maybe we could make the finances work at an higher value and if that’s the case then yeah, get him in. All that matters is whether we think he is a missing piece and he’s affordable; if so, the precise amounts involved are irrelevant.

Right now our priority is about trying to secure as many Premier League quality players as possible for around £150-200m. If we stay up, then next summer we’ll have a similar budget, but will be more about securing quality over quantity and a couple of £40m players will likely be on our hit list.

Not a lot judging by how quiet it always is when someone asks that question. We don’t want him anyway, not worth that money, never was.
| Delap worth £40m??? on 11:08 - Aug 25 with 938 views | Superblue95 | Before the release clause was revealed he was being tipped with £50m moves when he was our player. He’s had a bad year since then but his valuation was unlikely to drop that much from that £50m level, especially with him now being on a long contract at a bigger club. | |

But we sold him for £30M? Anyway, whatever. Yes, longer contract/bigger club premium innit.

We sold him for 30m because of the release clause but he was hot property that would have gone for more if the release clause didn’t exist. He was being hyped big time by the media and his goal haul was impressive given we ultimately went down with a whimper, so his market value was definitely much higher than 30m. So it’s not the case that his value has risen by 10m, it’s that Chelsea got him for a good chunk less than he was worth and are now looking to sell him at or above his market value.

We paid £24m + add-ons for Emersonn who had never played in the PL and had less than 10 career goals to his name. Some people seem out of touch with the cost of young strikers of this sort of profile these days. [Post edited 25 Aug 11:56]

I think if GON style necessitates a striker that is hanging off the defenders shoulder and running with the ball hell for leather towards the goal, Then Delap is your man ( at CC level). I dont think he has enough about him in the rest of his game that is effective enough at PL level . AS finances are finite for us , we cant afford to 2waste2 it on a layer that appears ( to me ) to have a limited array of skill sets . Im not meaning that in a derogatory way at all. He just looks t have one way of playing , and that way essentially was sussed in the second half of our first PL season I felt . He may do well at Forest because of the way they like t play. They could suit his game . But I personally wouldn't want to see him back here.

The only talk at the time was that we potentially gave Chelsea better payment terms (i.e not all upfront) in exchange for a sell on fee. Whether that actually happened or not who knows.

Quite possibly nothing. The £30m release fee is said to have been in the contract between ITFC and Delap. So in other words, there was an agreement from when he signed for us, that if someone offered specific terms to acquire his registration from us, we could not stand in the way. If those specific terms stated that the consideration that had to be offered was £30m, and £30m only, we would have had no leverage to insist on further sums being due contingently in the future. Unless we gave Chelsea something else in return (like better payment terms as suggested elsewhere on this thread), Chelsea could just insist on the terms that were specified in the deal with Delap, whatever they were.

I've seen mentioned of something like a £5m loan fee then the rest an obligation. Wonder where we'd stand on that if we do have a sell on (swear Phil confirmed this at some point) - sounds like potential shenanigans to reduce a sell on. I imagine contracts these days are written to cover all circumstances.
