| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 18:25 - Sep 1 by FrimleyBlue | It's not, his job is to excite the fans, that's part of the game esp around this time. My point was there are people saying surely you didn't expect 25 new players etc. But when the CEO does come out only a week or so ago and say we are not done, we are not done. you can understand why many would think brilliant, those gaps are going to get covered, or closely done. |
If you're an excitable member of the fanbase, maybe. I personally think there's nothing wrong with saying "We're not done" and then getting a World Cup winner who we all thought we had no chance of a few weeks ago. You're reading an awful lot into 3 words.

Considering O'neil at the time felt like we were getting a handful more players, I don't think I and many others were reading to much into what was 'We're not done, we are not done!' war cry, rather than just 3 words. But hey, i'll continue to defend people's views, you can defend the club it's all good.

Not really, the reality was Ashton made it sound like there were lots more incomings happening, that's all me and you are debating

“Lots” is maybe exaggerating it to the other extreme, don’t you think? I was expecting another 2 or 3 in as of a couple of weeks ago. O’Neil said a couple at the weekend. That usually suggests 2. So, it’s one. I’m surprised there’s not at least 1 more. I guess O’Neil is too. I guess we’ve not been able to get 1 over the line, for whatever reason. Still not a bad window overall. However, anyone thinking we’d be getting “lots” more in in the final two weeks were always going to be disappointed. 3 months ago I said we’d sign up to 12 new players. I also said we’d spend close to £200M. That’s pretty much where we ended up. Overall I’m satisfied with the window. Sure, some small detail could have been better, but realistically it couldn’t have been much better with the more incidental constraints we were operating within. I guess my biggest surprise is that we haven’t taken advantage of the loan market, and got in a couple of fringe U21s from a CL club.

I don't think it is, I Guess it depends on your personal definition of lots. From the way he spoke and at the time O'neil still talking of players across various positions, I didn't expect two, no I think without Ashtons talk, if he'd just said we are looking to resolve a couple of positions, that's pretty straight forward and kinda lets you know where we're going. He said "We're not done" and we weren't. That's it. That's the reality. Nothing about numbers. Anything more is what you're projecting, but not what he said.

Not sure why you're ignoring the other words in the sentence he gave, and the way he gave it, the tone, everything. Not a chance you genuinely heard that and thought after Palacios it would just be one more. [Post edited 1 Sep 22:34]

I think it's pointless talking about semantics but, whilst this without doubt the best transfer window we've had possibly ever, we are still short in terms of depth, particularly at the back and maybe on the right wing, whilst also holding on to squad including players who we were probably looking to move on. I imagine, if he was honest, he would describe the window as satisfying but frustrating.

We’ve only spent £40m plus since he said that. Sign8ng one player widely considered to be one of the most high profile players in the clubs HISTORY, and a cf which we really needed. I don’t like Ashton, but I make him right in what he said. It is simply unrealistic to think or expect we’d land every player and cover every weakness we have. It just doesn’t work like that.

What other words am I ignoring? From memory it was something like, "I can tell you, we're not done." If we sign Flemming then we signed two more since he said that, one of which most have called the highest profile signing in the club's history. I have nothing more to say.

For what it’s worth, this is what AI makes of Ashton’s interview comments and the subsequent events. TLDR : on the balance of probabilities it most likely meant 2 more signings, but there’s is much smaller probability that it could have only meant 1, or even 2+ So how many did Ashton mean? On 19 August, I think the evidence points to two significant further incomings being planned: 1. Exequiel Palacios 2. A senior striker And the second wasn't necessarily Abraham specifically — the requirement was the position, with Abraham ultimately being the preferred solution and Flemming becoming the alternative. That's important. I don't think Ashton necessarily knew on 19 August that it would be Palacios + Abraham. What he appears to have known was that the squad wasn't finished and further recruitment was planned. The strongest evidence is the change in language There is a progression: Ashton: “We're not done.” O'Neil, before Palacios: “trying to get a few in” O'Neil, after Palacios: “We're hopefully not finished. We're still trying to do some business.” Deadline day: Flemming brought in to solve the outstanding senior-striker requirement. That is remarkably consistent. My conclusion I'd assign the following probabilities to what Ashton meant on 19 August: Interpretation My assessment Palacios was the only remaining signing ~10% Palacios + one further signing ~70% Palacios + two or more further signings ~20% The eventual outcome — Palacios + Flemming — fits the middle interpretation almost perfectly. And there's an interesting wrinkle: the final recruitment spend is now approaching £200m, with Flemming's deal potentially worth around £20m including add-ons. So Ashton was not bluffing or simply using generic transfer-window language. The club genuinely had more recruitment planned when he said it.

I use AI professionally, and in the right hands it’s a very powerful tool. I even have our development team using it to generate code now (although still peer reviewed whilst it’s training). Analysing simple tasks such as the written word, timelines and statistics is child’s play for AI. Just using it as a glorified search engine to do what you or I could do, but in a fraction of the time. [Post edited 1 Sep 23:37]

Morning Frimmers! Your point wasn't just the emotion/tone, it was the other words he used. "Not sure why you're ignoring the other words in the sentence he gave". When I said it was something like "Let me tell you" you said my memory's wrong. So I'd be very grateful if you could tell me what those missing words were.
