| Starmer quitting as an MP now he has his PM pension on 08:16 - Sep 2 by balcombeblue | This thread is about Starmer. Why do you keep referring me back to Farage? I can check, but I am sure you have done this on another thread. If you don't think the timing was vindictive, then good for you. I do and it's not a unique view. There will now be a challenging by-election around the time of the autumn budget too. |
Because your disproportionate and poorly reasoned attacks an starmer stand out very clearly against your silence on farage and give the lie to your denials of being a reform leaning agenda driven person. Of course it's not vindictive. It's made at the proper time. At the start of the parliament. A better example of the way in which the right wing press sought every cheap point, is hard to imagine.

That of course is possible, and if that is the case, my criticism of him on this particular aspect is unfair.

The governing classes of whatever Party have their heads in the trough, You only need to look through recent years where teflon Tony was PM. Now has his own company and many multi million pound houses. How the Tories went through endless PM's each entitled to an allowance well over £100,000, even Liz Truss who lasted a couple of months. Rayner who got £17,000 for "Forgetting" she owed £40,000. The list goes on. Donations of £5 million, clothes, sunglasses, ipods, concert and football tickets. Jobs for friends and a post somewhere when they leave office. Money means nothing to them. Just tax the plebs a bit more when the time comes.

We wouldn’t need change if the country hadn’t been screwed over by policies Reform have been lobbying for and promoting for years. Austerity, Brexit, punitive immigration controls, deregulation, etc. They’re all a large part of what’s made the country poorer and people more desperate. Most of the Reform MPs were part of the worst Government in our recent history that helped lead us here - corrupt and incompetent grifters who are using the nativity of people for personal gain. We do need change, so don’t vote for Reform 👍

| Starmer quitting as an MP now he has his PM pension on 08:06 - Sep 2 by DJR | I think this is an example of his ruthless pursuit of power overriding the principles that one would expect of a human rights lawyer. And interestingly, the Guardian yesterday had the following article. https://www.theguardian.com/po "Almost half of terrorism arrests in Great Britain since 9/11 have been in past year Increase coincides with proscription of Palestine Action last year which has led to thousands of arrests for allegedly supporting the protest group" |
A ruthless pursuit of power he then didn’t appear to want to exercise. He’ll be a very odd footnote in the history of UK Prime Ministers. Deeply apolitical from what I could see. Didn’t really know what to do with power and largely wasted a massive majority. He oversaw a few good things but they were unconnected and lacking any sense of greater vision and purpose. Plus often the good things he had to be reluctantly jostled towards. He gave free rein for ‘not good things’ to be promoted and implemented by those around him. A very strange PM and quite unsuited to the role, albeit for very different reasons from the previous 3 or 4 failed PMs. Agreed, he should have stayed longer and sucked up having to do some public service on behalf of his constituents.

Disproportionate? The PM with an enormous majority who burnt through the good will in less than 2 years. Not rating Starmer is hardly exclusive to me. The party polls around 25%, a historic low. He's been ousted by his own party despite retuning 400+ MPs, but then it's all the fault of the 'right-wing press'? Starmer could have made the announcement on Monday, or Friday, or during the summer. If you don't think he/his people timed this then that's your opinion. It would be interesting to know if he told Burnham beforehand. As for the lie/denials about Reform, I assume you want to put me into a box so you can shout racist at me and not engage in anything interesting. Shame you can't be convinced otherwise.

You seem to agree with Benters that the country needs change, who do you suggest we vote for, Tories poor, Labour poor, leaves Greens who seem to be led by an idiot. Lib Dems led by a guy linked with the Horizon scandal or Farage, so not a great choice

A missing ingredient was his lack of connection/empathy to the population and particularly his potential base? I remember that first summer. Within weeks the winter fuel announcement, when not put in a manifesto. That was damaging. Slightly more controversially, the coldness when he visited Southport and spent two minutes there laying flowers. This gave the electorate a view of him that he couldn't shake.

A great summary of Starmer. He seemed like an accidental politician who fitted the bill - a Labour MP who wasn't a Socialist & therefore wouldn't scare off the middle class voters Labour needed to win a majority. Seems like a safe pair of hands but was totally unsuited to the role of PM (although nowhere near as unsuited as Johnson or Truss).

He was dead behind the eyes wasn't he. That winter fuel allowance set the scene. Even if there were arguments for it, that lack of empathy for the worst affected was very damaging. People wanted to know that they weren't forgotten, especially after a particular brutal few years of covid and then rampant inflation. I don't think he was comfortable in the public eye at all. Maybe he would have made a better diplomat instead, who knows.

Yes. Disproportionate. Big fuss over someone no longer pm deciding to step down as an mp vs someone pulling a publicity stunt.

There is no base support about 25% for him and this will be the peak. There is no programme for government. How can you possibly draw those conclusions 1 day into a leader's first parliament? You keep telling on yourself.

Yes, I'd agree we need change. There's a lot not right. We could right essays about what's not working. People can't find a dentist and wait months for medical treatment, we've got rapidly rising rates of cancers in young people, we've got a mental health crisis, we've got a social care crisis, a massive surge in foodbank use, people choosing between heating or food, a young people employment crisis, we've got crap being discharged in our rivers now at record levels even during one of the driest summers on record, we're splitting up families if one of the couple of kids aren't British born, we're killing off one of our most successful exporting industrie (education), we have foreign interference, corruption/cronyism and in our democracy. I'd like someone who puts people and this country first. And by that I don't mean flag ands willy waving about how great we are, I mean someone who'll make sure people have dry and warm shelter, aren't affected by water and air pollution, have access to healthy food untainted by pollutants and cancer-forming additives, get the tools needed to find work and feel that their work is valued and fairly paid. Who's doing any of that? I can't think of any parties. Labour are beholden to corporate lobbying putting the interests of profit over people. The Tories are largely responsible for the flatlining in living standards and deterioration in our environment. Reform are the same as the Tories but more extreme, so definitely the worse option. The Greens opportunistic populists with some questionable views. Lib Dems, who? It's probably down to us to get more involved in politics and push for what we want rather than sit back and see what's offered. Although we're increasingly not represented in favour of the corporate lobbyists who are pumping £millions into funding parties. And then when things do get too much for us, our rights to protest are being severely curtailed. It's hard to believe that we have much agency or meaning at all. Still, 3 points from the first two games and a good cup win are pretty good :)

Are you advocating a return to austerity? You've stated you're a conservative in general so I can't imagine it would be tax increases that you're going to use to pay down the debt. SB
