I wonder if we will see a slight formation change on Saturday. Palace play a 3-4-2-1 with 3 CB's who want a physical battle and create a box 4 to outnumber in midfield with the two 10's and two 8's.
Thinking back to GON pre match presser against Liverpool, toying with the idea of going with Enciso as a false 9. I wonder if we go with that this weekend to disjoint their back 3.
The central CB in the 3 (Disasi) will want a big striker to play against to be aggressive, have physical contact with and duel, but with a false 9 like Enciso, will he want to be dragged out of their defensive shape and follow his movement deeper?
I would also bring Ouattara in to provide some extra legs in midfield to help cover ground on the wider areas. We haven't seen a lot from him, but what has stood out to me is that he is dynamic, athletic and can provide legs in midfield.

Tho if they are playing that kind of formation, it will reduce the threat on our goal (with only three attackers). So what we will need is more width to play around their midfield and put shots in from wide, with followers-up for the rebounds.
Going defensive will only match their negativity and risk a stalemate, when we could otherwise pepper their goal and get a win.
Edit: Giving Disasi his big, physical forward to play against, Emersonn, will take him out of the game, leaving our other attackers with just the two to play against. There's two ways of looking at it, in possession and out of possession.
In possession, I would disagree that it is defensive and matching their negativity. It can be an effective style provided the front 3 offer variations of movement. Enciso is intelligent and would find space to receive the ball. Maeda would need to give them something to think about in behind and Fatawu can go 1v1 effectively. Defensive units in a back 3 do not want to be moved about, they want to remain in their comfort zone within their structure. Can we make them uncomfortable or play into their hands?
Out of possession, you narrow off central passing lanes and force them to play wide. Remain compact in our shape by covering that side of the pitch the ball is in and let their centre backs try and find the forward passes. I'm sure they would give it away more often than not or play longer as they are not good enough to break a compact shape down in my opinion. Also, the less Adam Wharton sees of the ball, the better it is for us.
With Flemming and Emersonn on the bench, we have two options to change momentum if it is going against us.
I also think back to Friday. Van Dijk and Jacquet were brilliant at winning duels. Palace back 3 are similar profiles in the sense that they welcome the duels. Everton's CB pairing will be the same. They are big physical monsters who want to head it, kick it and kick you, but you play into their hands if you give them that target man to do so. | |

I am increasingly of the opinion our captain and player of the year last season should be in the middle of defence. Not to say Greaves has been particularly poor, but he's just not as good a defender. Comes with risk due to the right/left balance, but it's a worth it, especially somewhere we're not likely to be playing free flowing football out from the back.
I also think Ouattara can only have been signed with the idea of him playing right back eventually in mind. He's not going to get many midfield minutes at all once everyone is fit, and he won't play left back.

If we are to change formation, think I would go 532, with Ouattarra (sic) and Davis as wing backs.
Bring Nunez into midfield, he covers a lot of ground , as well as being comfortable on the ball, with Emersonn and Enciso as a front two, Enciso almost has a free role to drop deeper, go left or right.

All 3 Palace goals last week against Fulham came from their wing/ fullbacks.
Also noticeable in the city game was that was Kamada is closed down and can't pass back to Wharton he lost the ball. A lot. In fact when Wharton is closed off they really really struggle to advance whatsoever now without Munoz. Khalili looks decent but certainly not found his legs like his predecessor to any extent yet.
If i am GON i go 5 at the back with Outarra on the right and tell him or Davis to invert when the fullbacks are not forward. I put Enciso/ Maeda as a man marker on Wharton and force him to pass backwards or more quickly forwards. I tell Greaves to man mark the striker and DOS/ DIOP to clear the back lines. Then go Palacios Lukic mid and Flemming up top.
As proven by their previous games Palace do not really care if you get the ball out wide but they are so slow at dealing with smart passing in the centre of the pitch. Palacios/ Lukic/ Enciso are all capable of doing that and Flemming is a good striker at finding space for through balls. |  | | |

5-3-2 (Fatawu and Davis wing backs) with Enciso to have more of a free role behind Flemming. A midfield three to give us more control and Palacios less of the physical stuff to worry about, in hope he dictates the game.
