I know we cannot leave someone stateless but can we not change the law and then not allow him back into the country until he pays his bill? Or allow him to fly in but the second he leaves the airport he is held until his bill has been paid? Absolutely disgusting. These people should be embarrassed by their level of greed but we will have people on 25k a year defending them.

According to Wikipedia, he is of Greek descent, so maybe that has played a part in his decision.

Not sure if you’ve misunderstood here - I don’t think he actually owes anything. He paid £330m in the UK last year - the £330m ‘slips out the door’ is just because he’s no longer resident and therefore the UK won’t get another £330m next year.

Yes, I understand that. I am saying why should he be allowed to have all the benefits of a British passport when the country is in a difficult time if he's unwilling to pay his share? Especially if he plans to be here just under the threshold each year and use public services etc. If he is moving to avoid tax he is scum. A level of wealth beyond anything he will ever need. Enough to set his descendants up forever if he wants to. I just find it sickening. A level of greed that should embarrass anyone enough not to do it.

I suppose the news should just be a dispassionate list of all the events that have occurred the world over during the day. That would be good. Personally I think if you hit the billion mark you should just get a plaque to put on your house that says ''Capitalism? Completed it mate' and then be taxed 100% of your wealth beyond that. Nobody NEEDS to be a billionaire. [Post edited 8 Sep 15:49]

Yes I understand it is 100% motivated by greed, however it’s still not reasonable to double tax somebody. Effectively it would make you a prisoner in the UK, I was looking at going to work in Switzerland, if I had to pay tax to both domiciles it wouldn’t be viable. Also, again not specific to this guy but you aren’t really using public services if you aren’t domiciled in a place. In my opinion the ire should be directed at places that offer these golden visas a leading a race to the bottom.

There was an American AI company owner on the Today Programme today who was moving the headquarters to London. He spoke about how attractive the Kings Cross area is when it comes to AI, and said it was second only to Silicon Valley. But he was on at about 6.20 am, so probably not many would have picked up on this.

Is he moving to avoid tax? If he's been paying his fair share all this time, then maybe it's something other than that? He's of Greek descent.

Well, it eventually happened, and this is how Private Eye reported it. "Precious Mittal "Billionaire Lakshmi Mittal quits the UK amid tax raid on super-rich," screamed the Mail headline. The reason for his flit is the ending of "non-dom" tax status and thus inheritance tax breaks on overseas wealth. But is this such a great loss? Mittal, 75, established a handful of relatively small UK operations while he was here, making the real money on steel operations abroad. The UK, exempting income kept out of the country, enabled him and other non-doms to low tax rates worldwide, while the benefit from his spending such as on super-prime London property, though doubtless high, appears a small return for such a distortion in the tax system. Oddly, among the papers most vocal on the Mittal's ditching of the UK when it wanted something in return were those with former non-dom proprietors, the Mail and Independent (prop. Evgeny Lebedev)."

I find it both equally funny and tragic that the papers who appear to be supportive of why the super rich leave the country, tend to be the ones who criticise people for not paying their way, and for expecting hand-outs from the state.

If you have a system of government, law and society which is willing to recognise you have a wealth of over a billion but aren't willing to pay towards keeping that said society going then for all his Oxford education he really is a myopic dip****. As I'm sure he has told many and been told many times. You are owed nothing, I will laugh when he or his descendants screams murder when that crow comes home to roost and that is all they own*. *spelling edit [Post edited 8 Sep 16:47]

You mean Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit. I didn’t listen to the interview but based on what I know Replit are not moving their HQ to London but London office which opened today will be their first international office and Euro hub.

Yes, that's who it must be. I was probably dozing in part at the time, so must not have picked up on this difference but I suppose it still goes to show that businesses or people can move in or out of the UK. [Post edited 8 Sep 17:04]
