An article in today's Guardian alerted me to the fact that the club has a sponsorship deal with the unlicensed overseas betting company, 8xBet.

The question for me is why on earth do we have anything to do with a betting company, let alone an unlicensed one?
Are we really that desperate for money? And where is the due diligence?

If I'm right in thinking, it's for the Asian betting market only,. Legally 8xBet cannot offer services to a UK based customer.
The deals pay well for the club, and is intended for international broadcasts as advertising.

Key fact: The gambling business Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral, BetMGM) are the ones calling on Premier League clubs to end their affiliation with unlicensed gambling operators. A vested interest.
The situation is similar with other clubs having betting partners that are not allowed to operate in the UK. I think it's part of the Premier League being an international market. Unlicensed in the UK doesn't mean that there's no sponsorship interest.
Everton is a good example with Stake, who are also not licensed in the UK. The ban on betting companies on shirts only applies to the front, so Stake goes on their sleeve. Then there's the different question as to whether "CMC Markets" is a form of betting on CFDs. So long as revenue drives SCR, and in turn success, then clubs will snap up deals to survive.
I'm glad Ipswich has decent shirt sponsors and the likes of 8xBet are relegated to less prominent positions (while taking their money). |  | | |

Yes, it's one we keep trying to ignore.
Whilst there might be money to be made, I would much rather the club had no association with any institutions - or politician - of such dubious probity and moral worth.
And yes, I know being in the top divisions of professional football, let alone the Premier League, means compromising with morals and ideals but gambling destroys lives and unregulated gambling lacks even the pretence of standards that exist with regulation. |  |

I think the gambling advertising is one of the worst things about the modern game. We are watching matches in front of LED boards encouraging fans, often young, impressionable people, to go to casino betting websites/apps. That may be the start of a process of addiction causing huge harm to them and their families, and may lead to suicide in the worst cases. |  | | |

When Man City partnered with 8XBet in 2022, they claimed the firm were founded in 2018 but no one, no one, could pinpoint any details about who owned them, where they are based and when exactly they set up.
The company that "own" them weren't actually set up until 2021 and their domain wasn't registered until 2020.
Sadly, Our club is now guilty of promoting illegal gambling in the Far East but you'd be forgiven for be being none the wiser as these deals (Town haven't announced it, formally) and firms are shrouded in secrecy.

Really don't see the issue if it's making the club money. There's a massive over reaction to betting. Nobody makes anybody bet. I like a bet, but i know my limits, as do many other people.
I was raised by a Dad who never had a bet and always told me betting was a mugs game. But i still like bet. I made my own mind up when i was an adult.

There was also a presentation on the pitch about the Samaritans and something about how the Premier League apparently looks after fans. It did make me wonder how much of the Samaritans' work is caused by gambling addiction. [Post edited 11 Sep 7:46]
