This was the first game I took my son to, although unfortunately he had already latched on to Liverpool after they won the Prem in 2019-20 so a heavy home defeat to Bolton didn't exactly make him want to switch allegiance!
But 5 years later and after taking him to more games over the last couple of seasons, with Nodge and QPR at home last season being his favourite games, he is now a Town fan. We were at PR last week for the Liverpool game, where he was belting out the words to Edward Ebeneezer pre-kickoff, and he was even booing Van Dijk for hassling the ref during the VAR check!
People often mention how far the club has come in those 5 years, and for me how my son has now converted to being a Town fan is the cherry on the cake.

Football stays in families, at least with good parenting.
25 years ago when my son was 3 I took him to his first home game, against Liverpool (the 0-6 one) as I thought it might be the only time he ever gets to see Ipswich in the Prem. We subsequently got S/Ts in the family section but once he was about 7 the pressure from school chums meant he asked for a Man Utd shirt. We got him one, and for a couple of years he said he supported Man U.
Then one day I got home from work and went to his bedroom to see him, and saw his Man U shirt in the waste bin. I asked him why, and he said "Dad, I've decided I want to support Ipswich". One of the best moments ever!
Here we are in 2026 with season tickets together, sharing good times and bad together.
It's all down to the legacy of Sir Bob, I grew up going to games with my Dad during those glory years, and it never leaves you, then it rubs off on your kids. Rest in Peace Bobby. | |

That league one promotion team was bought by Cook and moulded into a proper team by McKenna. I do wonder where we’d be if Cook hadn’t been manager and we’d gone straight to McKenna, because for all his good qualities McKenna’s signings were a little hit and miss. |  | | |

He brought in some good uns but 50% of Cook’s signings were failures. I looked it up the other day.
No manager has 100% success record, KM included. Had he arrived with Ashton on 1 June or earlier, we might have had a chance of promotion that season. Certainly play offs. However, it took nearly a season for McKenna to build the true devastating team he did first time around (and much of last season to weld together his third promotion team) so my guess is that we’d have missed out.
Cook is a likeable man and very good at the level he operates in. His track record speaks for itself. I’ve lots of respect for him and he certainly never shied away from shovelling the cr@p he found here. When he came, we were that level. With the change of ownership we suddenly weren’t and he became a poor fit for what the owners were trying to do.
The change in five years is dizzying. Hopefully those running the club have a grip of it and a solid plan for the future. |  | | |

LOL it's taken a few years of "good parenting" (ie. letting him support who he wants but with a faint hope he'd change his mind at some point) but the main factor has been the atmosphere at the games I took him to last year. We always try to sit near Blue Action now as certain other parts of the ground can be a bit subdued, as we all know.
His revelation of being a Town fan only happened on holiday last month, when a waiter in Vienna realised we were English and asked us who we supported. I answered on behalf of my son, thinking he was still more keen on Liverpool, but he soon corrected me!
It's his birthday soon too, so we're going to get him his first Town shirt, hopefully the first of many. | | | |

My son was born in Ireland and flew across with me from an early age. But as a child you probably would do that out of the excitement. Two things that made me realise it's going to be life long fan
1. He flew back from Slovenia to meet me in Sheffield for the Barnsley away game that more or less secured our promotion. What a night that was.
2. His girlfriend was wearing a Town shirt when they were watching a match in a Pub in Galway.
