Climbers round dead or dying trees are amazing.
My Magnolia died last winter (suspect it was just too wet for it), so rather than just chop it down, bought a Clematis Montana (think it was 'Summer Snow' but not 100% sure) to climb up and through it. Has grown 3 feet in 3 months!
I did just this for a customer with a couple of his trees that had died,and I shaped the tree cut off some of the smaller branches and twigs out of it.
They made excellent bird feed stations and with plants like a nice Clematis Montana growing up them they looked fantastic.
Don’t use Russian Vine though,that stuff is a nightmare.
Plus you have all the little insects who live in the trees.
I can’t wait to fully heal and get out in the garden with my loppers !

Sorry to hear that, very sad. The soil may need some heavy treatment.
Sadly, my garden is composed of well-established bushes, shrubs and trees, so it is not really possible to do that.
But generally clay is good for growing apart from things like Rhododendrons, so the solution if droughts are to become a thing, is to extract water by pump from the stream over which I have riparian rights. That's what the previous owner did but the pump he used is now broken. And I would only use the water to preserve bushes etc which this summer have proven to be vulnerable, rather than, say, using it on the grass.

I had one die a few years ago because of a combination of sharp frosts and bright sunlight when it was coming back to life in spring. I left it in place but last year it toppled over because the sometimes very wet clay soil must have caused it to rot at the base.

Roses and salvias especially.
We have a China Rose (sorry) that climbs around a crab apple tree that’s kind of dying due to the rose. This one won’t come back now but when it blooms in spring it’s just crazily beautiful, with the tree acting an incredibly evocative foil. Currently the four cosmos beneath it are et pleased with themselves.
Blackberries having a second ripening too.
It’s amazing and awe inspiring.
From what I have seen of wild blackberries, they seem much smaller than usual.

I have lost one Lavatera plant and a Bamboo seems to be really struggling both were taken from cuttings about 15 years ago so were very established plants.

If the bamboo is dying that's a bonus....horrible invasive things that shouldn't be anywhere near buildings or neighbours gardens!
