January Transfer Window 06:16 - Sep 17 with 1109 viewsLA_Tractor_Boy

The club had an amazing summer transfer window. Unfortunately we needed a whole new team to compete in the PL and got one.

But it's obvious that the current 25 + 2 man squad is slightly unbalanced, with 6 central midfielders, 3 attacking midfielders, 5 wingers but only 7 defenders.

I'm guessing we pushed ourselves to the SCR limit in the summer, so to sign any perm defenders in January and keep within the 25 man squad, we'll need to sell a player or two. I don't think loaning players out will allow us to stay within the SCR rules.

As we saw in the summer, it's not easy to sell players when we need to recoup transfer fees - again to stay within SCR rules. Or for a player on a PL contract to accept a move to a Championship club.

If we exclude players that GON won't want to lose, the options to sell are:

Palmer (register Button instead)
Taylor (will be 'pure profit' for SCR)
Mehmeti (should be able to recoup the £3.5M paid)
McAteer (probably an SCR book loss, having paid £12M and only 18 months into a 4 year contract)
Ogbene (probably an SCR book loss, having paid £8M and only 18 months into a 4 year contract)

I don't think we can sell Szmodics, Johnson, AAH etc. until next summer.

Thoughts?

Money likely very tight , but we may well need a centre half and/or right back that is up to the level of the rest of the summer signings.

So far our defence looks very weak.

I'd say Taylor will likely go and possibly Palmer.

Wouldn't rule out a Philogene move either tbh.

Players who I think could leave in January

Taylor
Palmer
McAteer
Kippers
Philogene
Akpom
Furlong
Nunez
Walton

I'm not saying will, just could

Could see Sindre going on loan somewhere

and I guess if silly money offers come in Davis or Clark

I don't think we will entertain sales for any key players in Jan. We haven't invested all this money to try and stay up only to destabilise things half way through the season.

Worth remembering we haven't brought any in on loan so if we can free up a space or two that avenue is available to us and one or two more high profile players may be open to that by Jan depending on how their season is going.

Who is going to loan a CB with higher ceiling than Greaves unless it's a loan to obligation next season and you are paying a nice loan fee/ added value next summer to sweeten the deal.

More likely you can go for loaning someone young at a top club who isnt getting minutes e.g. Vitor Reis at City for left CB.

But again a depth choice rather than starter which maybe makes loan harder and City already sweeten their deals enough as it is.

Depends really doesn't it? I'm inclined to agree with you... however, If you listen to some of our fans then a mannequin would do a better job so who knows?

Things happen, there will always be one or two who aren't getting the game time they expected or are coming back from an injury that we can roll the dice on.

I think we'll end up selling Mehmeti, Palmer and possibly even Philogene to fund a new defender, and then get another one on loan.

I think people forget with the Prem that you are aiming for 40 points. Which is 10 wins 10 draws and the other half of your games are losses. Ergo your centre backs and keepers are going to concede goals.

Yes their are better centre backs than him but to get much better in January without spending money is just unlikely.

I think the earnest is to get a right back in and then for Diop and O'Shea as senior centre backs to step up and support him

Yep, the defence is certainly our weakness.

With all the attacking talent we have, we will score goals, but these mistakes at the back will cost us many points this season.

I wonder if we expected to get rid of more of the fringe players (Taylor, Mehmeti, McAteer, etc) thus freeing up funds and squad places to be able to sign more defenders.

At the moment though, we will just have to outscore our opponents as we ain't getting many clean sheets this season!!

RIP Sir Bobby

A starting RB on loan surely is first on the list if we are close to maxing out budget.

You’d have thought we held enough back for one or two signings/loan fees in January.

This would allow us to cover for injuries, if they fell in the same position, or similarly for lack of form. Or it allows us to develop the squad further in the area(s) which it is weakest, and at the moment that appears to be centre half and both full-back positions. Spending absolutely everything in the Summer would leave us exposed.

It is quite nice not having everyone saying we need to sign a a “number 9” though.

From everything that's been said and those on here who understand the new rules (not me!), we should have plenty of headroom for further decent level signings in January.

That's before you add in any outgoings, which I assume will be those types already listed in the OP. Although I can see a lot of those being loans with obligations to buy to higher-end Championship teams.

As I said yesterday too, all depends on how our season looks by January. Are you buying/loaning to dig yourself out of a hole or buying to push on?
