They thought they would win the second leg. In those days, away wins in Europe were quite rare. That's why the 2nd leg in Cologne and the previous round in St Ettiene were so impressive.
Midweek European semi-final, followed by FA Cup semi-final the following Saturday, followed by European semi-final 2nd leg the following midweek. If only the FA had given us the some of the flexibility with fixtures that clubs today receive. Although fixture congestion was inevitable with more league games to play and reaching the latter rounds of the cups.

We had lost all the away legs as you say, but up until St Etienne in the previous round. There was a nagging feeling that we had blown it, then the heartache of losing to Man City in extra time in the FA Cup semi-final, so to go to Cologne and win the away leg was simply amazing. | | | |

The away leg I listened to on the radio half way up my stairs as that was the only place I could get reception.
When they scored I celebrated so much I slipped down 4 steps.

Drove up from college in Guildford with an Ipswich supporting mate who was one of the few students with a car at the time. Bloody long trek back then but we did the St Etienne home leg and the FA cup semi too. Skint after that and had to do some shifts in the student bar to replenish my meagre grant.
