Rather worryingly there were ~100,000 people watching a live-stream of him doing it.
At the protests on land, emergency workers were assaulted:
"Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was conducting inquiries into the boat-slashing incident. It said officers had made six arrests for offences including assaulting an emergency worker and aggravated trespass. All six people were in custody on Tuesday night."
Also good to see the false narrative about asylum seekers getting given everything they could ever want is still going strong:
"Gosport local Dave Palmer, 43, was among the protesters. “We don’t want them in the country at all. They get given everything. I work 70 to 80-hour weeks as an air-conditioning engineer. What does the government give me? Nothing,” he said."
False information like this that is perpetually circulated within echo chambers needs to be tackled as well as the actual actions at protests. That is of course easier said than done though.

I don’t share your concerns about illegal immigration, because I believe the entire debate around small boats is being artificially amplified to distract us from the far greater threats facing our country.
The focus on Channel crossings is a classic distraction tactic used by the billionaire classes and certain media outlets to turn people against those less fortunate than themselves. By keeping everyone outraged about a tiny fraction of overall migration, it draws attention away from the real, structural failures affecting our daily lives like the rise of far right extremism, the degradation of our education system and the existential threat of climate change. The real danger isn't the people on the boats, it's the criminal gangs exploiting them and the social media algorithms exploiting people's anxieties for profit
My perspective comes from real world experience, not online rhetoric. I am the son of an immigrant, my wife is an immigrant and my boss is someone who was granted asylum. Many of my coworkers, friends and neighbours are immigrants or the children of immigrants. They are incredibly good, hard working people who contribute vastly more to this country than those far right protestors we see rioting or causing disruption.
Not to say that my view isn't a passive 'anything goes' liberalism. True integration is a strict two way street. My wife made a massive effort to learn the laws, respect the norms and integrate into the community while retaining her own sense of national identity. I have absolutely zero tolerance for any migrant who brings deep seated, illiberal intolerance with them or rejects fundamental values like gender equality and mutual respect. If someone is intolerant to that level, they shouldn’t be welcome here. The difference is, I want the system to rigorously filter out actual ideological extremism and crush the smuggling networks, rather than using a broken administrative system to whip up blanket fear against everyone trying to come here.

I'll take this at face value. Honestly, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. If someone is desperate enough to make that kind of journey, who the heck am I to judge them and call to send them back? It's totally outside my life experience and I think (having visited quite a lot of the world) that they must feel they are in dire need. I really don't begrudge anyone landing here a roof and meal and some due process, especially given the UK's record in destabilising large parts of the global south. The numbers are still very small compared to our population and (ugh) GDP. |

It's not just to the right though is it? Politics feels alot more extreme on the left & right than what it did 10/15 years ago. The same can be said for European politics. |
