| Family days out in Edinburgh. 14:01 - Oct 14 with 620 views | MattinLondon | Hiya Just wanted to find out whether the TWTD hive mind has any suggestions regarding family days out in Edinburgh? Fun places to go to where kids will find exciting and not bored. Is Dynamic Earth worth a visit? Are the Harry Potter walking tours good? And whether the Real St Mary’s your is scary for an 7 year Old? Be great if anyone can recommend any other places to visit? Thanks in advance. | | | | |

Thanks for the suggestion - we’ve been to Chester zoo a couple of times which I’m guessing is a lot better than the one at Edinburgh.

Department of Magic. It's in an old tavern, kids get to make potions, adults can booze, its got escape rooms too. If you're there half term week then the Zoo did a decent Halloween thing after closing when we were there a couple of years ago

I'd happily take my young kids tbh. Really interesting and distinct experience. A nice way to learn of the history in a way that doesn't feel like being dragged around a boring museum either. On another occasion I did do a specific 'haunted' tour thing on Halloween once, that probably wasn't child friendly but then it was at midnight and I was half cut.

Lots of interactive stuff for kids (and adults). We stubbled across it on the hop on hop off bus (again a good way to see the city without going up and down hills) We did the castle too. I thought it was overrated and overcrowded but each to their own. [Post edited 14 Oct 16:16]

Yes, to the Harry Potter tours having done one last year with family and having very little interest in the topic.. There's a bit of local interest and a load of geekery for the HP-obsessed child. The one we did very pointedly referred to "The author" in case of any concerns there. The National Museum of Scotland was good, we only had an hour or so and that was not enough time to see assorted dinosaurs, cars, Dolly the sheep and a load of other random stuff. Not sure if the upper floors get a bit less kid-friendly but the stuff on the lower floor definitely is.

That place is the bollox. Very dark* though, so I reckon it depends on Matt's 7 year old really. *as in little light - not vibes. [Post edited 14 Oct 16:36]

Not boring at all - just had a look at their website and it seems quite an interactive fun place which is good.

I made a specific visit this year to look at the tiny coffins that were found on Arthur’s seat. Interesting read.
