Can those be retrospectively awarded by VAR?

Also baffling it was only reviewed when Forest demanded it seemingly. O’Shea walks off with half a shirt and Delap gets nothing too.

Makes no sense

Clearly VAR thought it was a clear and obvious error from the ref so two officials thought so.

However, it was clear it was never a clear goalscoring opportunity so the on-field ref was right until he gave the free kick and yellow card which he is not allowed to do!

Re-refereeing the game because VAR got it wrong.

If that was why it was reviewed, OK. Did VAR really think that was a red card for violent conduct? They appeared to be reviewing for denial of a goalscoring opportunity. But I expect they are now allowed to re-referee that.

If the referee completely misses a foul or gives no card at all, and VAR sends them to the monitor to review a potential direct red card, the referee has the authority to award a yellow card and a free kick/penalty after looking at the screen.
According to IFAB protocol:
• The Trigger: VAR can only prompt an on-field monitor review if they believe a "clear and obvious" direct red card offense occurred (or a penalty/goal incident). They cannot call a review just for a missed yellow card.
• The Review Process: Once the referee is at the pitch-side monitor, they are reviewing the entire context of that specific incident.
• The Final Decision: The referee has full authority over the final outcome. If they look at the replays and conclude, "It wasn't quite severe enough for a direct red card, but it definitely was a reckless foul," they can issue a yellow card and restart play with a free kick (or a penalty, if it happened inside the box).

This bit seems to cover it:

As for the other query, I assume that the 'dangerous conduct' example is the most common/obvious scenario. I can see how it would equally apply to a possible DOGSO in that both incidents would raise the possibility of a red card.

It's the trigger where it went wrong.

How did VAR decide it was a clear and obvious red card?

Well done to the ref for actually looking at the incident and pointing out they were wrong.

Since a fee kick was given have to assume ref didn’t, in real time, regard it as a foul. VAR does not authority to award a free kick.
