I remember that match well (as a 15 year old) and it's also one of my favorite games I have attended, mainly because of Beatie's goal and Mariners goals.

Another one that sticks in the memory is when we beat southampton 7-0 at Portman road.
That game was on a saturday but with a 7.30pm kick off for some reason. Does anyone know why it was 7.30pm and not 3pm?

Some sublime football, but it’s the intensity on and off the ball that stands out from those days. We overpowered teams.

It seems a bit weird that despite being so good, we couldn’t attract a shirt sponsor deal

Which was the first shirt sponsorship deal in England? Were there many before our first with pioneer? I can’t really remember.

One of the best games I have ever seen at Portman Road. Some fantastic goals that day. Hard to believe that it is 50 years ago!

Whymark never got the recognition he deserved - probably because Town had so many great players. On top of his goals the way he hung in the air and the header down to Wark for the second goal was amazing. He did that week in, week out. A great full team performance - also enjoyed Hunter's tackles and his neat footwork on the right wing!
Lets hope we get some more days like that.

The intensity and fitness that season was impressive.

The Beat and big Al were down to sharing a fag at half time.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Its just goes to show you how many goal could be scored by crossing the ball, taking a shot or by just getting the ball in the box rather than keep playing it sideways and backwards and even back to the keeper time and time again.

Whymark, My first favourite player, quickly replaced by Mariner. Loyalty out of the window.

Whymarks, still my fave goal, it would have gone in if the goal was another 10 yards back! And against Beats’ sledgehammer thats saying something!

Think 81 was the first season of shirt sponsorship, maybe 80, Liverpool Hitachi? Certainly nothing on shirts in 76’. Getting Adidas the following year was a big deal as it was their first foray in British football. Even in 81’ shirt sponsorship was not allowed for televised games!

Remember coming away from that match thinking, wow, we have a fantastic centre forward now. Keith Bertschin had been given the role after Johnson left, but Mariner was a definite upgrade. His movement and reading of the game was like he had been playing for us for years. Add in his strength and power, elegance and poise. What a player he was. Complete package.
