| Look at me! (stroke, inspire yourself) 11:34 - Nov 6 with 944 views | NthQldITFC | ((stroke, but probably mostly 'Look at me!')) Fairly trivial thing, but I've done my first continuous 5km run in maybe 20 years earlier this morning and feel as fresh as a daisy after it. When I stopped playing football with knees that sounded like crisp packets being crushed when I went up and down stairs, and spent a couple of years doing nothing very energetic, I thought I'd never really be able to run much again, at least not without severe ramifications for days afterwards. I started cycling quite a lot a few years ago and got back into decent shape, but this year I've started running (bought some decent running shoes as a presumed necessity) and gradually built up my distances. To my surprise and delight I've found that the cartilage has either grown back or smoothed out a little over the years, and the knees seem to come through tougher tests without much complaint at all. If you think you can't, maybe you can. | |

Yeah, I went for some Puma Velocity Nitros, and it feels like running on springs. Thoroughly recommended.

| Look at me! (stroke, inspire yourself) on 11:48 - Nov 6 | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Well done sir. What’s trivial for someone can be a great achievement for many. I used to be good at running, ran a full marathon years ago and almost a dozen loads of half’s from 2014-2019 in my late twenties into my mid thirties, best time was 1.38 but that’s a decade ago now. COVID ruined me and my fitness and I still haven’t got it back. Too much stress, traveling and not enough clean living. I need to make health a priority next year. | |

You are right about the shoes, my wife bought some as she took up couch to 5k, they are fantastic things, makes all the difference to the joints. No point skimping on them.
| Look at me! (stroke, inspire yourself) on 12:33 - Nov 6 | LegendofthePhoenix | Well done you sir! Not such a different background to me - I used to be a good runner (was useless at football) and was entering 10k and 5 k races and getting some good times - but that was 30 years ago. I had what were proper running shoes at the time, but the shoes of today are on a different level. Anyway, my knees gave in, I was getting terrible pain in them and had MRI scans that said I had osteo arthritis. So I had to stop running altogether. I invested in a cross trainer which is zero impact, and still use it about once a week, but for the last 20 years I have been taking 2000 mg of cod liver oil each day, in capsules. After a few months, the pain in my knees eased, and then after a few more it just faded away. So 30 years after the diagnosis, and a recommendation that "You will need to have knee replacements but lets leave it as long as possible" I'm pain free. I couldn't recommend cod liver oil more, but you have to give it several months to see any benefit. The one time I ran out of the stuff and went a couple of weeks without, the pain returned. I'm not sure I'd want to risk running again, but you have got me wondering...... [Post edited 6 Nov 12:36]

Do it! I run an 87 mile race next weekend, which makes me no better than the OP and his 5k at all, its all relative. But yeah IF you can get out there, do it... you never know.

87 miles! I don't mind at all saying that does make you a little better than me! Nice one. Superb. And thanks everyone else too.

| Look at me! (stroke, inspire yourself) on 17:57 - Nov 6 | GlasgowBlue | Well done. I didn't start running until I was 50 years old and suddenly thought that I would like to be around for my family a while longer, and needed to change my lifestyle. 13 years later, other than a couple of enforced breaks due to injuries, I run roughly 30 KM a week and a few half marathons each year. Keep going but it can become quite addictive in a good way. | |

You’ve missed out the decimal point between the 8 and the seven. I’m reading Failure is an Option by Matt Whyman; I’m about half way through and I’m enjoying it. He’s in the middle of doing the South Downs 100 at the moment. I like the idea of going long but a marathon nearly wiped me out and that was 15 years ago. Anyway, er, enjoy? if you can. Any if you can’t enjoy try to survive lol.
