One of my favourite-ever Town games. I just scrolled that video right to the end to see if it had Kiwomya's miss where he span, ran through and put it wide — hadn't seen it on any highlights packages since the game and had started to wonder if I'd imagined it or misremembered. But no, he really should have put that away!
John Wark playing wide right at 35 in the top flight against the Champions and scoring twice, the season before playing centre half. What a man.

good day that was, despite that awful neck lace-up Umbro shir.t And look at the quality in the Leeds side. A real second-season syndrome for them.
That shirt really was god awful. I think they are selling them in the Shop at the moment!

What the hell was John Lyall thinking? The audacity to actually attack a team at home and the cheek to score 4 goals- ludicrous!! Surely the club must've faced some financial penalty to even dare go on the offensive against the league champions? The management then must count their lucky stars they aren't facing top class calibre sides like: Birmingham, Rotherham and Wigan at home today - they'd have to be much more defensive in their approach, ask MM!?
TWTD. John Lyall worked his magic in 91/92 and got a team that finished 14th the previous season promoted. The first half of 92/93 we played some amazing football, and didn't spend a fortune. Goes to show how important it is to have the right manager.

yes, part of the retro range. Can't imagine they've sold many!
The original version in 1992 sold by the container load - I think I'm right in saying it was one of Umbro's biggest selling shirts that season after Man Utd.

Thanks for posting.
No problem, I hadn't seen those in ages either.
This game, the 2-1 win over Manchester United and doubling Norwich were highlights of a good season and the culmination of Lyall's time here. It was a ll a bit less fun after that.

That night time win at Carrot Rud live on SKY just before xmas 1992 was very special.

We are often accused of living on past glory but it wasn't just the Ramsey & Robson years. John Lyall & George Burley are also responsible for a lot of good memories.
The pitch invasion against Brighton being one of the best.

I think McGiven took more and more control from that point.
I sadly had to miss the Southend game as a cousin decided to get married on that day. We even managed a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in that first season in the PL.

Hmm..the 2-1 win over Man U (who could forget the save from Mark Hughes near the end) was the zenith. We then pretty much collapsed & even had an outside chance of falling into a relegation scrap until the welcome win over the Budgies (thank you Jase). not sure exactly when Lyall pretty much handed team affairs over to McGiven, but we did become pretty damn awful which was a shame as it ruined Lyall's legacy.

According to Rob Hadgraft's 'Ipswich Town-The Modern Era' in the summer of 1992 it was revealed that John Lyall would become 'club manager' and McGiven 'first team manager'. As you say things mostly went backwards once John Lyall gave up control of the first team.

That sounds about right.... McGiven was definitely give more responsibility once we went up, although once he took over completely, it started to go downhill.

The first half of 92/93 went quite well though. When we won in Norfolk on 21st December we were 6th and them 1st. When we beat them again 3 games from the end of the season we were 16th and them 3rd. We were actually still 7th on 2nd March but between beating Man U on 30th Jan and beating Naarwich at PR we went 13 games without a win.
All this info from the aforementioned Rob Hadgraft book.

Yep, think we were as high as 4th at New Year.... after the Man U game, we lost 0-2 at Villa Park (a Saunders run and finish and a Saunders hoof) and that was the beginning of the bad run.
