Not sure that's terribly conclusive. With the mask and helmet, very difficult to tie the pics together. He's named by people who claim to knw him, but that could equally be false internet rumours. With the get-up, the brolly and the way he's acting (in font of cameras), he's also making himself stand out rather too much for an agent provocateur. They're supposed to incite others to act, not be the only one doing it.

This is how unfounded rumorus and conspiracy theories start, and how innocent people get hurt. The internet has a lot to answer for. Is it impossible? No. Will large numbers of people accept a few tweets and bare assertions ot be good enough to reach conclusions on? Regrettably- yes.
| The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it.

it's how gossip, rumour and fakery are generally conveyed. 'people are saying' rather than a source or proof.

Not really. The severity of the rioting just draws further attention to the unresolved original incident. And if it is proven to be a cop doing that, the fallout and consequences would be very considerable.

So if you're trying not to present youselves as a police force utterly out of control (killing people during arrests, or having former officers shoot black joggers), why do something which outright proves it?

Sinister if true on 14:47 - May 29 with 2431 views | Swansea_Blue | Whether it's the same guy or not, it doesn't exactly fit the narrative of 'the blacks are rioting again". Very strange behaviour - some well-disguised guy turns up, casually smashed in the windows, very calmly talks to the people around him and then just saunters off. Someone totally in control. Not saying that this is a police officer at all, just it's strange behaviour.

Could be anyone- but the comments in this thread sum up the problem. "People are saying its police/ fire brigade spec mask". Evidence? Do others have access? Would an undercover officer be stupid enough to use a police issue mask? The time to believe or entertain this stuff is when there is evidence for it. But these things simply get propogated. Like the stuff about covid and hte wuhan lab where substantive rumours and semi-beliefs have grown from utterly fatuous information.

Indeed. There is enough evidence of the massive levels of violence and corruption being committed by various US police forces that there's no need to go undermining genuine abuses by floating these conspiracy theories. Show me the evidence. Like video of a man being suffocated to death. Then I'll sit up and listen.

There are other people than the cops who might want to incite violence. Criminals, for personal gain from looting. "Anarchists"*, seeking to bring on the revolution or just wanting to fight the police. Youths out for a bit of vandalism while law and order has broken down (c.f. the UK riots of a few years ago). Indeed, given the safety of their officers is under threat, you'd think the police would want to minimise violence. * In the media sense, not the political one.

I expect the four officers who killed George Floyd will be offered up as a sacrifice, a limp effort to demonstrate that the problem is being tackled, but institutional racism will continue as usual. It's not that there's more racism these days, it's that more of it is being filmed.

I was thinking 'professional' protester rather than police. This could easily be someone who's got a grudge to bear against the black community and may have done stuff like this before. They're no stranger to violence whoever it is - they look well prepared and practiced.
